Mpeg1 Audio Peak Mystery

I suppose there is no real answer to this question, just another computer mystery for me. Without the gory details of how I goofed up my previous file, I have loaded a previous mpeg1 video/audio render about 40 minutes long. I am attempting to use it to guide me in reproducing my wonderful work onto brand new .avi video/audio of the exact same movie segment recaptured again. Has some voiceover and background music I now need to recreate for the .avi I am rebuilding. BUT, the mpeg1 audio portion shows proper audio peaks for about 3 minutes then flatlines the entire rest of the file. Have tried rebuilding them and nothing changes. Sure would be easier to sync the two audio portions if I could see peaks on the mpeg1. Any thoughts of something easy to try to get them to rebuild?

Try this:

Move your cursor to the first event on the audio track if it is split click on it so the audio track is selected. Render as a .wav file. Will only take a minute or so. Add a new audio track. Drop in the wav file, usually it will have the peaks restored. At least it usually works for me.

I see this and a similar problem when opening MPEG's as source files every so often. The usual problem is a tiny section of the file is corrupt. Not enough to prevent Vegas from attempting to open it, but sometimes just enough to stop Vegas dead in its tracks building peaks or claiming the file is much shorter than it actually is.

Case in point today I loaded a old MPEG-2 of fair size about 350K, I know should be about 26 minutes in length. Vegas opened it but said it was only 2.46 minutes in length. Opened in VirtualDub, rendered out to AVI, loaded in Vegas, Bingo, back to its proper 26 minute actual length.

Not that I'm complaining, but Vegas doesn't do as good as it could when in runs into minor problems. I could say that about Microsoft's Media Player as well. Guess nothing is perfect. <wink>

Billy Boy, Bless you my man. I did as indicated right away and there it is. Seem's obvious to you folks but not so quick myself these days. Have not verified in details, but definitely looks fine with peaks all the way to the end. Now I can backtrack much more efficiently. Thanks for another one solved. Have been to you web site and appreciate the expertise that may penetrate the old bean slow but sure. Great information. Thanks again.
