2 pass should be used when using bitrates below 6,000,000 bps (that's an arbitrary number I just picked -- you might not notice a big difference until you get down below 5,000,000 bps).

Whites should look exactly like they do from the Vegas timeline, if you are using the Mainconept encoder inside of Vegas. When I say "from the Vegas timeline," I mean as viewed on a TV monitor via a Firewire connection through your camera. Your computer monitor CANNOT be used to judge ANYTHING.

It's not uncommon for DV cameras to record whites outside legal and the DVD players will clip these to legal. Simply applying the BC Legal FX in Vegas will unfortunately do the same thing.
Using Vegas's CC Computer RGB to Studio RGB template will fix the whites but is likely to set your blacks too high.
Strongly suggest you study Glen's excellent 'levels' tutorials on the VASST site on this very topic.
