Mpeg2 Incompatability :-(

Just got back from a ckient with tail between legs.

I rendered a Multimedia CD in Vegas 5 as a Mpeg2 Default Template but even after installing Windows Media palyer 10 with additional plugin the file would not play.

So now I'm rendering and making a Multimedia CD in Mpeg 1 and see if that works better.

So what's the gig with this Mpeg 2 stuff anyway? Sould I mayby have used the VCD format instead?

TIA, Garo

Mpeg1 will work fine.
Your client's computer probably didn't have any DVD software player installed that's why mpeg2 didn't play. WMP doesn't include any mpeg2 decoder, you have to install a third party codec in order to use the DVD capabilities or plain mpeg2 files in WMP.
For VCD is the same story, you need VCD software. Most if not all software DVD players will also play VCD.

all windows computers going back to windows 3.1 will play vcd (mpeg1) without any additional software or codec installation ....

That is true, but you have to find the MPEG file on a VCD disk, which many people don't know what to look for. A DVD player will recognize it.

So it sounds like rendering a straight mpeg1 file is a good bet for now. Is that right? Why not just render a wmv file?

Of course, one can open the mpegav folder and drop the .dat file in wmp and play it. It is an mpeg1 file.
But I was under the impression that dvd/vcd software should be installed for a vcd structure is recognized, meaning menu, chapters, background etc.

Garo! I'm not having it! - Your client has inferior hardware . . .This time the Customer IS wrong . . Don't beat yourself up.

Now, you need not say anything to the customer, but let yourself know you have done a good job . . in a timely way . . .and for many clients and this one just hasn't got the where-with-all! That's all! - Now me? I take along a veritable "all sorts" of variants and "rely" on the client having nothing more than a VHS tape machine with the 00:00 flashing at me OR pin-printer!

Ok lesson learnt! If you don't know the kit you are playing stuff on: NEXT time take - as I do - VHS tape and upwards. The media is cheap. The Customer relationship is paramount. I've even taken pages of "mug-shots" SERIOUSLY - just so the client can get their head around stuff!

Customers? You gotta love 'em - Ah bless!
