MPEG2 not readable in WM9 ??

Hi !!
My first go at v4 (at last !!)

I just collected some AVI's and mpg's (MPEG-1), threw some titles and transitions, and rendered with my pristine new 3.06 GHz P4.
Strange ... when I rendered to MPEG-2 using the MC codec and the settings for PAL DV, Windows Media 9 couldn't read the resulting mpg file (all garbled).
When I rendered to AVI with settings for PAL DV, no problem.
When I rendered to MPEG-1 using the MC codec and the settings for PAL DV, no problem.

Any issue here ? Any codec missing ?

Thanks for sharing your experience ...

You need an MPEG2 codec. Either in the form of DVD player software or some people claim there are free MPEG2 codecs available online. MPEG2 is licensed so it is not included with windows.

Dave, thanks for your reply. It can make sense, but puzzles me even more !!!

MC MPEG2 is not a codec ? That's what I used ...

Also, I made my experience further ... I loaded my (non-working in WM9) mpeg2 in DVD Architect and it read alright.

Which means that WM9 couldn't read it but DVDA could ...

Now, what ?

Fool me ... you mean that WM9 needs an MPEG-2 codec ???????????

Then, wouldn't WM9 be able to use the MC MPEG-2 codec also ???

After all, a codec can COde and DECode, right ?

you need a mpeg2 codec to DEcode - vegas codecs are internal ..
install powerdvd or windvd and all is well, even the demo version of powerdvd will give you mpeg2 playback in wm9 (though windvd or or powerdvd is better at playing back mpeg2 files) , or get the "media player 6.4 modified" which will play all (even better) .

Because MPEG2 is licensed, some codecs are Encode only. As BJ M said, you need a decode codec on your system.
