When I select "render as", MPEG2, NTSC DVD, the custom template button is not selectable. I would like to increase the bitrates used by the MainConcept encoder which default rather low for my taste. Is there any way to do this?
Render to DV AVI (I don't remember the exact name) in VMS, then pull those AVI files into DVDA Studio. In DVDAS you can then select from a lot of different MPEG2 bit rates. I think you have to click on "Make DVD" then select "Optimize" on about the second or third step of the process, and you can select a bit rate up to 9.8 MBS (default starts at 8 MBS) via a slider. The screen info shows how big your files will be.
You can also select "fit to disc" on that same screen, and DVDAS with calculate the best bit rate you can use and still fit your project onto the DVD (because it knows how big your audio files are, how big your avi's are, etc.).
(But yeah, both VMS and DVDAS are calling the same MainConcept encoder, and it seems like we should have the same options in VMS that we have in DVDAS.)
Thank you Tim for the reply. Yep, I purchased MVS Platinum and was perturbed that I couldn't find more settings for the MPEG2 encoder. Why the "custom" button is disabled for MPEG2 I still don't quite understand.
I did NOT even think to check to see if you could do the encoding within DVDAS since I was under the impression that MOST authoring packages recommend and/or require that your video be dvd compliant mpeg prior to import into their software.
Thank you for pointing out a workable alternative approach. I really do like working with this package. Thanks again!

It may not be necessary, but I think it's a good idea to use mpeg for authoring whenever possible - it saves a lot of time having to re-encode if you want to make changes to the DVD.
