MPEG2 vertical motion artfacts

I'm sorry of this is a "well known", but I didn't find it searching the forums. I am creating a photo montage using Ultimate S 3's MotoFoto tool. I have stills moving both across the screen (left -> right and right -> left) as well as up -> down and down -> up. When I render to MPEG2, the across-the-screen pictures are fine, but the pictures moving vertically have "motion artifacts" - in the case of a green baseball uniform with white stripes, the stripes have a faint "ghost" where they meet the green of the uniform - and that "ghost" moves with the picture as it moves up or down the screen. I don't see this when I render to another codec such as WMV. Am I doing something wrong, or is this just how MPEG2 is?

Well,

I checked both the setting in the Custom tab of the Render As dialog to ensure it was set to "Best" as well as making sure each photo event had the Reduce Interlace Flicker flag set. I also confirmed that the artifacts do not appear when I render to WMV. So I guess it is off to experimentation to see if anything will help. I appreciate John Meyer sending me tips on things to try!

If it helps when I work with pictures I make my Project Properties Frame Based (progressive) and when rendering to mpeg2 change to the same Frame Based (progressive).
You shouldn't have a need for interlaced with pictures or slow moving pictures unless they are also part of a same interlaced video source..
I don't see this when I render to another codec such as WMV Good chance that the WMV file is frame based (so I would also use frame based / progressive with the mpeg2 file).

Thanks for the suggestion - I've kicked off a progressive render.

Hey -

I set the project as well as the Main Concept MPEG-2 codec to progressive scan -- that did it - artifacts gone! Great - many thanks!!

But if I want to combine video footage (interlaced) with this photo montage sequence in the same project, can I still set the project to progressive? I don't so, but once again, I am being presented with "opportunities to stretch my understanding"... : )
