MPEG4 Codec (hardware?)

Having been editing MJpeg footage for years I never had problems with rendering speed or preview speed (mostly 25 Fps (PAL).

Now I would like to buy the new Sanyo Xacti HD700 (720p) camera because of the size.

It records, however, in MPEG4 v2 (264) and the samples that I have found so far simply exhausts my PC (Core Duo 2.15 with 1 GB Ram) totally - previewing at approx 7-8 Fps and rendering slowly too.

The problem is clearly not my VMS 8.0b - but the codec that I have installed.
So I would like to ask if anybody know a real fast codec - maybe even a hardware accelerated one that works well with VMS??
If it exists, a USB codec real-time thingy would be just super??

VMS works with its own codec internally for mpeg4, so I don't think there is anything you can do. I checked some Xacti footage yesterday too from a guy at Vimeo.com, and they were indeed very slow to edit with Vegas.
