mpg files

this might be a really dumb question but... I've loaded Pro 9 dragged a number of mpg clips to the timeline, previewed them, closed the computer down to have lunch, returned to the computer started up and tried to drag those same mpg files onto the timeline and Vegas will not have a bar of it. I get the red circle with a line through it?
I kind of recall when I first opened the files there was some "rendering" happening before they opened. What was that about? Help appreciated.
Cheers
Michael

I've just opened Pro 8 and dragged the same files onto the timeline without any problems at all?
This is all on a Vista 64 bit system

Perhaps a quantum singularity caused by the Large Hadron Collider?

When you unsuccessfully dragged the files to the timeline, could Vegas have still been in the process of initializing a pre-existing project that you had just reopened?

What was the source for your mpg files?

I've loads of problems with Vegas adn mpgs. Especially if its HDV, captured outside of Vegas (say, in PPro), and has an .mpeg extension instead of .m2t.

Also, had issues with those camcorders that capture mpegs to mini-dvd.

When it seemed like it was rendering something, it was probably building the peak files. This is where I got lots of crashing, but you can cancel it or turn off that behavior all together.

I see some wierdness with mpg too.
Mine were created from my Canon FS100 camera. MOD renamed to MPG.
The wierdness I see is when previewing them from the vegas explorer. It may show the first frame of the file, or the current frame from the timeline, but it doesnt move forward.

I don't think it has much to do with the source given that V8Pro has no problem with it while V9Pro acted unpredictable by first opening the file without issue but later, after having closed it down and re-openend the project, not allowing the same files onto the timeline.
Having said that those mpg files were derived from jvc everio TOD files which don't lend themselves to a very efficient workflow!
