mpg files will not play in quicktime player

Vegas video 2.0b

Rendering to mpg will not play in Quicktime player,
am I doing something wrong, please advice?

rendering to .mov works, however I can play mpg files from varios web sites with quicktime on a mac. mpg file created with Vegas Video will not play to in Quicktime player.

Just found out that MPEG-1 files will play
on QuickTime.
