mpg2 Editing & Vegas 4 ??

Shouldn't I be able to drag an mpg2 file to the timeline and edit in Vegas 4?

When I drag an mpg2 file to the timeline, the audio peaks build really slow, and
when I press play, I get sound, but the video doesn't move, and eventually Vegas
stops responding. Is this normal, or do I need to change a setting?

I just upgraded to Win Xp, and boosted my ram to 896mb. I would think I'd
be O.K.

Any Thoughts?

Thanks,

You should see the video, & it should play. You might want to try removing/re-installing Vegas to get the Mainconcept codec working.

Other possibilities include the mpg2 file might be bad or non-compliant - does it play in wmplayer, & using what codec?

That's normally what happens when you try to edit with MPEG files, very slow loading and playback (shouldn't crash though) and the final product after rendering usually doesn't look very good. You should try to stick with uncompressed avi files for editing if at all possible.

If you need to edit mpeg's, capture all i frame's. Mpeg editing/playback is slower though. Vegas must decompress everything before it can be used, and mpeg decompresses slower then dv avi.

I have been struggling with the issue now for some time. My 1.6Ghz P4 struggles with my MPEG2 files especially when I have a long (20 minute) video to edit. If you check the Vegas FAQ on this site it says MPEG2 is not recommended for editing in Vegas. I have found that I can do a rough cut reasonably well by editing MPEG2 files, but if I want to do a fine cut I struggle to get the precision required because of all the decompressing that the software has to do. I considered a faster machine, but I am not convinced that is the answer. To do a fine cut I am now converting all of my MPEG2 files to AVI using EasyX Video Converter and editing in Vegas's native mode. It is a joy after editing MPEG2. I am now seriously considering selling my wonderful little Sony IP220E camera that only records MPEG2 and buying a MiniDV so that I can use the Vegas capture utility and edit in native Vegas format. This is probably not the answer you wanted to hear.

TheHappyFriar gave me the same advice about capturing all 'I' frames as he has given you, and that may assist, but I can't work out how to do that in the MicroMV MPEG2 format that the Sony records.

Thanks Guys, after posting on this subject, I did a little research and pretty much
came up wth the same answers. It,s not often that I try to edit mpgs anyway, I
was just curious as to why it wasn't working.

Thanks Again,
