MPG2 Encoded video occassionally jumps forward!

jlewis99 wrote on 4/6/2003, 11:09 PM
Anyone notice this? I've taken videos that I've captured (1 1/2 hours worth) and every once in a while it seems to fast forward for a second making the people move very quickly. Then things are back to normal for 15 to 20 minutes then maybe another glitch. The avi from Vegas looks good. Its the encoding that DVDA does.

Any others have this happen???

Thx!

I have had the opposite problem. Preview pauses for a second. It is only in the preview and the Mpeg files play fine in DVD Workshop or Media Player. I e-mailed Sonic Foundry about this. They said they were aware of the problem and a fix is on the way. My problem only exists in DVD Architect previews. The burn DVDs play fine. It is not a Vegas problem, however mpegs previewed in Vegas have the same behavior. It is really not a big problem for me as I edit AVI in Vegas and really don't have to preview in DVD Architect as I am only setting menus and links. Burned DVDs work just fine.

What brand of set top player are you using? There is a known issue with some Apex players that we are still working to resolve.

Actually it is an Apex. AD-1500 I believe.
I have a pioneer player that I will check this against.
Please keep us informed :)

This is not just a problem with Apex players. I have a Daewoo DVG 4000S and have the same problem, only it seems to be more serious than what jlewis99 is experiencing.

You've been saying "a fix is on the way" for months. Could you please give us an approximate date?

We are currently working with Apex to determine the cause of this problem. I cannot give an approximate date as to when this will be fixed. We've acknowledge that there is a problem and we've been working to try and resolve it but we've never claimed that "a fix is on the way". All I can do is reassure you that we are working hard to resolve it.

I agree, this is not just a problem with Apex players. The same speed up problem is on my Mintek 1600 DVD player.

Hi collegaues, I'm Zoltan from Hungary. My problem is similar. The DVD mpeg2 files, encoded by mainconcept mpeg encoder of Vegas 4 are jumping. (I record films from television and write to DVD-R) I encode the film from Vegas 4 project as DVD mpeg2. I write this file (without any changing) to DVD by Ulead DVD workshop. When I play the discs in PC, it is perfect. But in my set top player (THOMPSON DTH 5000) the film is jumping in every 15-20 minutes, forward by 2-3-5 minutes. It seems to be a compressing problem of mainconcept encoder.

Likewise... I'm using an Audiovox player and the same erratic fast forwarding is happening. It seems to be worst in the frst 10 seconds or so of playback but it still occurs periodically through the video. For now I'm back using ReelDVD - it's slower to work with but at least it works.

I'm getting glitching and stuttering too with my Apex-600 player. It plays fine in the computer. I'm wondering if I should have purchased DVDA, since I never had these problems with MyDVD or DVDit. I'm hesistant to think it's the DVD player, since this problem only started ocurring after I began using DVDA.

I really hope a fix is on the way soon.

I haven't had the skipping problem on either of my two SONY set top DVD players. However, on the older of the two I have seen what I presume is some sort of buffer over-run problem. The video and the audio get out of synch. If I push the stop button and resume the video and audio go back into synch. It doesn't happen with the newer SONY set top player.

You could try the TMPG mpeg encoder which has a free trial period and see if the problem goes away.

There's a post from SOFO about this. Basically, there's a fix on the way in the next couple of weeks.
