much smaller DVD files than MPEG??

I've been making DVDs from MPEG files, to which I've added chapter points in DVDA. One thing I've noticed is that if I start with an MPEG file of around 4.5GB, the estimated project size will be a little less, say 4.2 GB, but when the DVD is created it's typically MUCH less, around 3.7 GB. Is this much difference likely to result from compressing the audio? The optimize window checks off the mpg file as ok, and the only rendering done is for the audio, but I'm surprised at the huge difference in file sizes.

Any ideas what's going on?

What format is your audio in to start with?
Typicaly I render to mpeg2 in Vegas and produce a seperate audio file as either .wav or .ac3 and no audio recompression takes place.

These are .mpg files that had been rendered in Adobe Premier and the audio is uncompressed. I think it's PCM.

DVDA will automatically encode your audio into AC3 unless you specify otherwise in the Optomize window.

Unless you reset the disk size to 4.7 the DVDA default is 3.95. Perhaps this could have something to do with whats happening.
