Multi-level compositing - render to new track?

There's a lot of really smart folks here so let me run something by you for a reality check. I have a compositing exercise and want to be sure there isn't an easier way than my approach.

I want to composite tracks 1 and 2, and use the result of that composite for a new composite with track 3. I know I can do this by rendering the 1-2 composite to a new track, mute the original 1-2, and place the new track above track 3 for the final composite. Or, I could use nested vegs as well.

In Photoshop I can flatten or group the 1-2 composite, then use this in the composite with 3. Is there a way to accomplish something like this with parenting in Vegas?

I don't think you can do what you want in Vegas or in After Effects for that matter.

Photoshop 'project' (PSD) files contain both the ingrediants and the recipe. When you merge two layers they are literally mixed inside the project. That's why a PSD file can become huge and why it's destructive and why tutorials explain how to do things so you can easily backtrack.

Both Vegas and AE are non destructive, the project files contain only the recipe. In both the choices for how to achieve what you're trying to do are effectively the same, nest or precompose.

Thanks Bob. Your response makes sense. I can achieve what I need via nested vegs.
