Multicamproblem with effects

T.aurus wrote on 10/9/2016, 9:13 AM

Hi!

I've got a Multicam problem:

-I set up 6 video tracks an did the colour correction for each track.

-Then I created a multicam track and activated it.

But then I realised that all effects (colour corrections etc.) disappeared. They were not applied to each track anymore!!

But I need them on each track.

What do I do wrong or what can I do to avoid this?

Thanks very much for your help!!'

Multicam workflow will remove TrackFX and EventFX. The alternate way is to use MediaFX. Right Click on the media clip on timeline, then select MediaFX.

As Set said, multicam mode will remove any effx. The best workflow is to edit the multicam, expand it back to multiple tracks and then apply effects or, as Set said, you can apply the effx in the media bin to each clip. You can save your effx as presets.

Thanks a lot for your help.

@ Set: after the multicam cut and the expansion I would have to apply the effects to ALL clips on the timeline? In my case a few hundred...

@david-tu: that's the best way to do it.

but the only problems that I still see are the crossfades that I added.

I worked a lot with crossfades in multicam cut. And when I expand it back to multiple tracks my crossfades were gone. Only hard cuts remained where the crossfades once were.

Is there a way to circumnavigate that problem, too?

Thanks again.

@set: apologies Set.

I misunderstood what you said. Yep, as media effects for each clip BEFORE the multicam cut it works perfectly.

Thanks again! :)

@ Set: after the multicam cut and the expansion I would have to apply the effects to ALL clips on the timeline? In my case a few hundred...

There are 4 levels of FX can be applied in Vegas Pro:

  1. MediaFX - FX applied to whole video source - so in this Multicam case, you can apply all correction to a camera source directly (assuming one video file per Multicam session)
  2. VideoFX - Standard most FX level like other editors, applied after doing cutting.
  3. TrackFX - Apply FX to whole Track. But since Multicam workflow compress tracks. It is not recommended to add TrackFX Level here - so the best alternate way is to put as MediaFX.
  4. VideoOutputFX - Last Final FX applied, so every cuts in projects will be applied with this FX.

So let's say your Multicam cutting is

1-2-3-4-5-6-1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1

If you apply color correction to all source 1 in MediaFX level, the color correction is automatically added to all first sources:

1-2-3-4-5-6-1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1

Then continue adding color correction to all source 3 in MediaFX level, then you have these:

1-2-3-4-5-6-1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1

Apply again to all source 2 in MediaFX level, then all second sources are also affected:

1-2-3-4-5-6-1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1

Compared to add the color correction in VideoFX level, where you drag-n-drop the FX to the clip in timeline, you need to add it on every cuts.

Other editors, like FCPX, Premiere, or Resolve may have what they called as 'Compound Clips' where you able to rearrange it again after being 'grouped' into a Multicam clip. But in Vegas, These multiple tracks are merged as clips containing multiple takes. You can see in by right-click on the clip > Take. A bit 'one-way-ticket' workflow. That's why the trackFX level and VideoFX level are disappeared. But, if you put the FX on MediaFX like above, you won't miss it.

Hope this helps.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your perfect explanation. I appreciate that a lot!!

Thanks again Set!

Nice explanation Set. This should be a stickie.

T.aurus, I generally apply all effx (dissolves and others) after the multicam cut. I don't know if there is a way to save dissolves or transitions after when expanding back to multi tracks.
