Multiple dissolves on single video event?

I have the basic version of Movie Director 8, and in the video I'm producing, I'm using two video tracks, where I'd like the one on top to be invisible most of the time but periodically come into view and then fade into the second track. I've managed to get this to work once- I mean, I can apply a single dissolve to the "top" video track and have it fade into the bottom one- but I have not figured out how to get multiple dissolves to occur during that single video event.

Basically, as the lower scene is running, I want you to sort of see moving snapshots of the upper scene interspersed with the lower scene, hence the desire for multiple dissolve events. Does this make any sense?

You can do this with an opacity envelope on the upper track.

Just lower the opacity down, then bring it up as needed.

Split/cut the scene on the upper track as many times as necessary.
Delete the segments you don't want to appear.
Do a fade in-fade out on the segments you do want to appear.
If you want the lower track to still be partially visible during the this time, lower the opacity (if Movie Director 8 has this capability) of the upper track as desired.

That way works well too. I've used both.

Hmm, I will experiment with the opacity envelope. I'd rather avoid splitting the event into multiple scenes if possible (because each video event would end up cut into 12 scenes), but I will do that if necessary.

Thank you.
