I can't speak for Sonic Foundry, but as soon as you start to see the
Be OS on more than 20% or 30% of desktops is when you MIGHT see
support for BeOS. It's simply not worth their while, I wouldn't
think. They have to think about Market Share... I'd love to see
something like BeOS do well, but frankly Sonic's software is so
stable on the windows platform that what's the point? You should
think about which platform is going to get the most support and
that's gonna be Windows for quite some time. So why not stick with
the operating system that has the most attention for the moment.

For someone excited about Be there are several things you should be
aware of - vendor support for this alterna OS is a REAL problem.

Other audio software companies, such as Steinberg, are less and less
excited about the promise they made to port to Be after the
announcement that with version 5 Be was going to refocus on Internet
appliances.

SF has come out many, many times and said they are a Windows platform
developer - period. I wish there was a big banner somewhere on the
forum site that said

"Sonic Foundry - We make awesome software...
for WINDOWS and nothing else! Deal with it!"

Be has a lot to prove before its performance claims will really get
anyone excited. Being a good bunch of code simply isn't enough. If we
can learn one thing from Microsoft its that like it or not, Marketing
matters. Also, little things like getting drivers for your hardware
help too.

OK. Obviously you people don't get it so here it is. IT DOES NOT
MATTER HOW MANY "DESKTOPS" WINDOWS SITS ON!!!!!! sonic foundry
software will not be on 99% of them, but the few vendors that supply
Be apps for pro audio and video will sell to 90% of the Be audio and
video people (100,000 preregistered for Be5 personal). Sonic Foundry
doesnt sell that much software when compared to titles like Half-life
or Quicken which are for the common people, who will never spend 450
bucks on Vegas or even 250 for AcidPro. We demand "PRO" products but
we run them on a crappy foundation. Most people dont have an Apple
but low and behold people make software for them and people buy it. I
will buy from what ever company supplies the first major Be
multitracker. Logic may beat out charlie so I'll buy that. And as
for "not excited after putting some effort on the internet" you all
use an os that is for networks(NT-shakey ones) and sending email,
looking at porno and buying hard to return items (WIN95, 98). The
moral of the story is this, you can continue to support a company
that makes crappy products (..but they say theyre the best)or you can
try to help change things. Sonic Foundry like all companies will
change with you or die. If we get some good options you might not
even miss them. Viva La revolution!!!!!!!!

Carl,

You make some valid points regarding the number of people who play 3D
shooter games compared to the number of people who buy expensive
audio apps.

You seemed to have missed half my point about the Internet though -
you left out the word 'appliance' when you referenced my post.

I said, to paraphrase myself, that Steinberg was slowing development
of Be apps becuase they were unhappy that Be is putting more and more
of its own effort into Internet Appliances - these appliances being
low end PCs designed for Web surfing and e-mail only. These
appliances would not run audio apps well. Be realizes that this is a
market that has explosive growth potential and they need the money to
survive. I wish them luck.

That lots of people signed for something free doesn't really impress
most people. Does this in any way signify that these same people
would pay real money for Acid or Vegas or that there is a meaningful
movement to a new platform by the DAW folks?

You also failed to rebut the truly deadly point about hardware
support. If I can't get Be drivers for my sound card, and let's face
it, Soundblaster Live! support isn't going to cut it - then me and
other semi-pro and pro studio folks not only won't migrate - they
can't migrate.

I've already got a completely stable, fast, economical solution with
NT running SF apps. Why should I try to help change things if I'm not
unhappy?

I'm not against Be in anyway. I wish it the best of luck.
Competition is a great thing for this industry. That said, its a
long, long, hard fight to get enough marketshare to generate real
excitement. Be was and remians an essentially unsupported platform
when it comes to having a core of pro applications and hardware that
serious musicians can use in a fashion comporable to what they
already have with Windows and Sonic Foundry products. This is plain
fact for now. If that really changes then you can wave your
revolution flag and get my attention.
