under options check preferences, then audio device. Make sure no matter what that it isnt set to 'microsoft sound mapper"

You can set one program to one sound card and another to other sound card. Options>preferences>audio device>dropdown>select card. You may have to set sample rate, bit value, etc. on your high end soundcard. If you choose microsoft Mapper, it will select default sound card. Note there is a glitch in Vegas that required you to set project sample rate to match sample rate on your soundcard or you will get an error message in Vegas. This was noted in Vegas 5 release notes. Also you may have to select proper clock for sync if you are inputing from digital recording source.
