Multiple Video Projects on 1 DVD

DavidPJ wrote on 7/22/2003, 5:07 PM
I'm just beginning to learn DVDA, and I have to say that sofo's documentation is not very helpful. Thanks to people in this forum for being so helpful especially to beginners like me.

Can I write multiple mpeg2 projects to a single DVD-R at different times? Then, can I create 1 menu system that reflects chapters in either project? I want to be able to play project 1, then you would be returned to the main menu to select play for project 2 or select chapters from project 2. A recent posting indicated that after playing project 1 project 2 would immediatly begin playing, without returning to the main menu.

Thanks for your ideas.

Last part first. I think you misread the play through ability. DVD-A can NOT play video two after completing Video one IF they are seperate files. To get around this limitation the simple way is make one large file for all your videos that will be on a single DVD. Then once rendered bring into DVD-A and set chapter points as needed. If you use the insert menu option DVD-A will build the thumbnails for you at every chapter point and put them on sub menu pages.

One menu system can control play options. My personal preference is to have a main menu with a single thumbnail of each video on the DVD. Clicking on each drops you to a sub menu which has a number of chapters.

The limitation is once someone clicks on video three it can't jump to video four. It should return to the top most menu (main menu) from which you can select the next video on the DVD you wish to play.

Thanks BillyBoy. Yes I understand I can put everything on one timeline in Vegas, render, and bring into DVDA.

However, I would prefer to have individual rendered projects in Vegas and then bring them into DVDA and burn them. This way, I could finish one project in it's entirety, from edit to burn, rather than having to complete editing for 2 or more projects, and simultaneously put them all on a timeline, then burn the DVD.

Is it possible to do this on an individual basis in DVDA?

Yes. You can use multiple projects in DVDA. What you can’t do is incrementally burn them. They must all be burnt in a single session. What I do is set my chapter points in Vegas and then render to DVD MPEG2 and AC3 file. I save this in a directory and wipe the rest of the capture drive clean and start my next project. When I have enough MPEG2 files to fill a DVD I just burn them all at once.

I finally burned my first DVD and it went perfectly! It's amazing how creating a DVD can really put the finishing touches on a project.

I'm still confused about the best way to burn multiple projects on a single DVD. I understand I can bring everything into one timeline, setup chapters and subchapters, and burn. I assume I do this with a copy and paste between the timelines in Vegas.

JohnnyRoy and others, could you explain in more detial how I can burn multiple projects on a DVD-R in a single session? How is the menu setup and how does it function?

What do most of you do if you have short projects that only consume 20-30 miutes or less of a DVD? Do you just have one project per DVD regardless of the size? I suppose the advantage of this is if the DVD were ever to become damaged, at least only one project is lost.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Actually, you can. You can set up as many A/V files as will fit on the disc and set them up as a "Music" Compilation. They will play sequentially.

Hey Billyboy,

I was reading Spot's Vegas book and looking at the Music compilation part of DVD-A and Spot says you can use this to show videos one after another. Basically you are fooling DVD-a into thinking you are creating a music playlist when infact you are creating an mpg2 playlist. It works I tried it.

When it asks for audio files to be dragged on the work space just drag the W64 or ac3 file and the video comes with it! When song (err. I mean video) 1 is done then video 2 is played. So just create your menus as normal, then on the page where you want a button for video 1, 2, 3, 4 etc just right click and choose "insert music compalation". Go figure.

I wasn't referring to "fooling" DVD-A into doing something. If that's what you want I could list a bunch of things too, but the issue becomes will doing that allow the DVD you make to play in ALL DVD players?

I don't know. Neither does anyone else unless they have ALL the DVD players out there world-wide in the marketplace. There are over a 100 makes and probably thousands of models.

What you see in the forum is a lot of people complain about is the end action feature (missing as a choice) which allows you to "program" a certain action. Similar to your drving down the road then hitting a "T" intersection and being forced to turn left or right. In the current version of DVD-A you're not given a choice as to what you want to do, you're forced to do the only action DVD-A supports.

Bet the farm this serious omission will be addressed in the next version of DVD-A. Till then you can do kludges.

Do you think that using the music compilation work around would make the disc less player support? I don't know enough about the DVD spec or how the files are written/read to know.

Can you create the Music Compilatation using just AVI files? Or do you have to use Vegas to render the separate video and audio files?

No probem, just put each one on the menu and set a scene select icon for each one. It will work fine. Each can have there own chapter points.

You asked how to do this. Make each video you want in Vegas. Set markers where you want chapter points. Render each video to MPEG 2 in Vegas. When you get them done. Open DVDA and select (drag) each one to the menu page. Right click on the icon each video and select scene selection menu. Double click scene selection icon. You will get a menu for that video with chapter points set automatically.
