My analog capture seems better than Digital 8???

I'm trying a new camera.

I'm capturing some footage shot from an anolog Sony TRV-37 (on a Digital 8 tape) in a Sony Digital 8 DRV-240. I don't have an i-link, or other fire wire card installed. The DRV280 has "USB Stream"...It is a link from the camera to a USB port. That is why I'm 'trying' this camera.

I was capturing analog with a Dazzle device in VF, but I had a lot of dropped frames, so I thought going from camera right to a USB port would be better.

The video captured is really choppy. It seems my analog capture was better? Would it help if I did have a 'fire wire' type capture card on my computer and use the DV port?

Thanks, Jon

Absolutely! Firewire is designed to handle the amount of data that is necessary for a digital video signal. USB doesn't even come close. The best you can get through USB is a sort of "thumbnail" representation of your video.

Jon,

Forget about capturing high quality video from a USB port. It will only start to happen when they start supporting USB 2.0. The USB video streaming capability of the TRV240 is only for low-quality web-cam type usage.

You really need an OHCI-compliant IEEE1394 (firewire) card. You can then use the TRV240's signal convert function to "pass-through" your analog tapes directly to your computer in high-quality DV format.

Thanks for the posts. I bought a fire wire card today, now I have to install it.

I was capturing my analog in .avi. With the 'digital 8' camera, can I, or should I capture in DV format?

I don't see a choice for changing the option for capture format.

Thanks, Jon

DV is a 5:1 compressed .avi format. It's probably the best format to use for editing & transferring digital video.
