My DMA Not enableable in W2K

I'm having this issue where Audio stutters and sometimes hangs up in VEgas Audio. I have a very stout system. Earlier I was told to enable DMA on my system, and I tried. (enabled it through the device manager, nothing.. Switched some chords around, nothing, played with the bios nothing.) It keeps saying its working in PIO mode. Can some one please help me enable this so I can get on with making music?
Thanks

this is the way i received my DELL 4100 in PIO mode 2 ( friends have recieved 8100's in pio mode 2 ) i went to dells site and downloaded intel ata chip set and intel ATA driver ... 1st install chip set -reboot -- install driver - reboot - after starting it will say installed new device ( this happens super FAST) - REBOOT ... then under device manager it will say ULTRA ATA on both ide channels .... if you do NOT have DELL - check your manufacturers site .. at dell it is found under windows 2000 so it's a OS thing - when win2k was released ATA 100 was NOT out yet ...

My problem is different, but, similar. I have a program reporting that one of my drives in Win2000 pro is not capable of the required sustained data rate. I immediately suspected DMA, but, cannot, for the life of me, find the place in Win2000 (pro) where I can select/deselect DMA.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks.

on my dell i have a selection within the bios to enable DMA ...
then in win2K ... under device manager i use to have a selection under IDE channel ( could choose PIO modes) but once i put in the new ATA 100 chip set driver i no longer have a choice -it is now in ultra DMA mode ! no choices ...

Hi Guys,

Here are a few links from Microsoft. W2k wasn't around when ATA100 drives first came out. They defaulted back to 66.

I believe this issue has been resolved in SP2 of W2k. Run the Windows update and this should get straightened up for you.

Thanks JDodge. Will run the update and see how it goes. Windoze help is useless. I search on DMA and get a nice definition of what the initials stand for . . . how useless.

search this forum on DMA you'll get lots of results.

1. Install SP2
2. Get/Install drivers from your MBOARD manuf. for your IDE controllers (EXAMPLE: VIA 4 in 1)
3. Enable DMA in device manager under IDE controllers for each HD/CDROM
4. Reboot. Check device mgr to see if all your HDs/CDROMs are in Ultra DMA mode.
