My lowly P4 3.06 isn't fast enough to edit at decent preview resolution using the Cineform codec. No worries. The M2Ts plus Gearshift Proxies take up less space anyway.

I do use the Cineform codec, but only if I want to work on the file in VDub or DVFilm or something. It probably wasn't worth buying for just this though.

Good thing I'm using the trial!

Are you getting stuttering audio running Cineform intermediates in Vegas? I'm surprised if so (because it's never happened to me, even when the system couldn't maintain 25fps). However if you're trying to run in another program, then audio stutters are usual unless your system can run up to correct speed. My AMD Athlon 2800+ can maintain 25fps without FX. My AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ runs 25fps with FX and multiple video tracks.

I believe the Cineform HD Connect is worth the money, but that is a matter of workflow and personal experience.

I have a 3 1/2 year-old P4, single thread, single core, single CPU computer. The Cineform intermediates play fine, with no stuttering and with perfect sound, and when playing from an external el-cheapo built-it-myself-from overstock parts no-name disk drive.

I just put a dance concert Cineform intermediate on my timeline and am watching it as I type this. At Preview (Full), I am getting smooth playback at about 17 fps (yes, it is not 30 fps). If I go to Preview (Auto) 320x240, I get full fps.

Ah, but the project settings are DV NTSC (720x480). Let me change to HDV project settings.

Using the HDV project settings (1440x1080), at Preview (Full) (1920x1080x32) I still get smooth playback, with full audio, but at about 7 fps. "Smooth" to me means that the motion does not start and stop. However, the fact that it is not full 29.97 is perhaps the jerky playback you speak of. However, to get full frame rate, if I switch to the preview window to "Preview (Auto)" and change the window to get a preview size of 640x360x32, the playback is full 29.97 speed (you can get these numbers by looking at the lower right corner of the preview display). If I keep this same window size and switch to Good, I get 10 fps, and at Best I get 7 fps.

More important, the timeline is complete responsive. I can click anywhere above the timeline, and playback immediately continues from that point. I can open dialogs and work while everything is playing.

Again, I am using an old computer with nothing fancy, and with a disk drive that doesn't have a fast transfer rate. These are full-fledged 60GB/hour Cineform intermediates.

It happens the worse when I add a wav in a track beneath an avi. The whole things stutters bad, and I don't mean a few frames, I'm talking video and audio barely chugging along

a regular 44.1/48k wav does this? Do you have any FX on the track? volume envelope?
Based on your system description, you shouldn't be having anywhere near these problems.
Try this;
File/project properties/Match Media settings. It will open explorer. Click on a CineForm avi file.
Play it with preview set to Preview/Auto
Do you still suffer stutters?

Do you have the latest driver for your audio-device installed?
If it supports ASIO - give it a try.
