My Impressions of Boris Graffiti 3.0

The_Jeff wrote on 11/1/2003, 10:45 PM
I've had the software installed and running with vegas for about a day now.

All I can say is Zippy, go by a copy. You will be very busy in the Boris Forums.

It clearly is a very powerful tool but my gut says that the workflow will never be as smooth as Vegas. I think I have gotten spoiled by vegas.

I have been able to create a few cool effects but the process is somewhat tedious and slower than I'd like.

So, is it worth the money?

I guess I'd have to say I guess so...There is nothing else that I am aware of that integates into vegas. With the discount it is not really a bad price. Hopefully after some additional use I'll be able to see past the complexity.

Vegas does spoil us! I got Boris Red and was really confused for a while. Boris just has a different operating style than Vegas...it's actually pretty cool once you get the hang of it.
Checkout www.desktopimages.com for Boris training tapes. I got all three and spend one hour a day three days a week just "practicing" with Boris.
Treat it like learning to play a musical instrument.

I do agree that I am sure I can (or anyone can) "get there" when it comes to figuring it out...Which is why I still gave it a qualified "yes" when it comes to buying it..

But, it certainly can not be picked up as quickly as Vegas.

Also have had 2 "curl up and die" errors and I have only been using it for two days......And I have not been able to figure out the exact sequence
that causes the errors...so those things scare me even more than known
repeatable sequences that cause application failures.

The_Jeff, or others: It's been about 10 days, and I'm wondering how you are coming along with Boris Graffiti. Had the light-bulb moment yet? I ask because I am edging towards buying it, but a learning curve requiring climbing gear would cause me much more hesitation than I have naturally. If you have any additional comments or thoughts on the use / stability of this package with V4, I'm very interested in hearing. Thanks.

OKay, I'm holding the Users manual for BG3. Without the index it is 651 pages long, the index itself is 23 pages long . . . . and the Contents pages roams over 20 pages. Not quite as thick as a programmers book, but at 4cms thick it is, IMHO, up there amongst the thickest "flower pressing" tomes I own! My Access2 is of a similar weight.

Okay, I'm scared stiff of this stuff . . . I'll bury myself in it for a bit and will only go for the really "I wanna do that!" features.

What I don't care for is the reoported here crashes of V4. V4 is that stable - considering that it may in anyway be made vunerable really doesn't inspire me.

I too was seduced by the discount. But by the time it got to me there had been a serious uplift to the price . . . hey ho . . .

Another thing. I haven't found a useful Forum yet. Tried the Boris one . . . not quite like this one . . . well it wouldn't be would it!?!?

Regards,

Grazie

Grazie: No chance. This place is rare.

So there's no quick start guide where you can fire up the app and churn out a few slick titles? That manual sounds daunting, to say the least. I think your idea of zeroing in on "how-to-do" on particular things rather than going to college on the app might be wise. Much creative energy can be zapped while pouring over manuals too long. You'll probably gain more by seeing some results sooner, than later.

For now, I'm convinced it might be too advanced a package for me. I still think Sony is going to buy or build us an integrated text maker for V_ that will forever put an end to this constant yearning for better and faster-to-create text effects. I hope I'm right.

Thanks for your candid comments about Boris Graffiti. You helped me a lot.

2Road Candid? Well yes. Poorer, definatley!

Someone needs to be SPOTted to do a neat little DVD tute for this one. Tell you what . . first one to market - IMHO - should clean up! Come to that a CD with the manual would be neat. Ironic that the package is designed to get text=message across in a sucinct and simple way . . . maybe they should review how creatives can get their heads around a doorstop of a Manual and remain creative . . . [ applause?? ]

Ho, if only S-V4/5/6 came up with a better text module I'd jump at it.... even tho I'd slapped my £££ on the BG3. But that's me . . . tell you what? I've now been put off from BRed . . . . and I really don't like the crashes "filmy" is reporting . . . .

It does take a while to get the hang of Boris and I am still working at it.

What works for me is to use the style library as a starter (it is in RED I'm assuming Grafitti has something similar) and then tweak the effects from there.

It is a quick way to get started and shortens the learning curve - with this amount of control there certainly will be one. Stick with it.

I think the Boris maunals are great - too little is harder to deal with.

Grazie there are a couple of tutorials on the Boris site that are worth a look.

Hiyah PAW . . . still on for the 28th - yeah?

. . anyways . . Yes I did visit the site. The've got BG2 tutes not 3. I'm presuming that this will happen soon.

I'm rather intrigued by "Write On Text" . . this is something that would be neat . . .

Look, it's not beyond me to pick and choose from the tome . . I do, do this . . . and yes I'll take my lumps and read what I need.

I'd like to find a forum that has users input on it. Looked at the BRed/Graf site . . not a whole lot going on there - yeah?

Best regards,

Grazie -

ps . . . my MONSTA! is quickly turning into a Brian Rix farce! - but that's another story . . . just to say that latest is that the courier service had picked it up from my home, London, and took it to Plymouth - instead of central Yorkshire - HAHA?!?! - Up shot is that I had 2 hours with it yesterday, and its on vacation in Devon . .
PAW wrote on 11/13/2003, 4:27 PM

bad news about the MONSTA, did it break down or something?

the most active forum for Boris is the creative cow, not loads of posts but probably the most.

The type on text is good and really easy to work with, hope you get the monsta back soon.

28th is looking like a problem as i will be travelling most of that week so the time away from home starts to become a problem.

The BG2 tutorials will still be a good start I think most of them will still apply there may be some UI/feature differences but worth having a go.

Funny you mentioned a write-on effect. Thats one of the effects I hope to find. I saw an intro to a TV program that had a very elegant write-on text effect. I'm not talking about something with a pen, wand or laser type animation, but simply elegant cursuve writing revealing at a perfect readable pace. I thought for a second, "wonder what I could easily do that with?"

I agree with those who say text, overdone, hurts the overall video, but, text, well done, can add a lot of interest to the content.

"even tho I'd slapped my £££ on the BG3. But that's me . . ."

That's me, too. I don't spend £, but I sure have slapped a lot of $ on "must have now" software purchases over the years. VV3 & V4 still rank as the best software purchases I have ever made. I'll admit, this text thing has me frustrated. I think I'd give a weeks pay if PinnacleTitledeko or Inscriber Titlemotion could be plugged into V4. Anyway, I guess I'd better bite the bullet and grab Boris Graffiti while the price is right and then do some heavy trial and error.
