MY MPEG templates have disappeared!

Liam_Vegas wrote on 11/4/2003, 12:50 AM
No idea how this has happened.... but I just tried to do an MPEG 2 render and although MPEG2 and 1 are listed when I select them there are no actual templates accessible. It was there last night... and the only thing I did today was to install Sound Forge 7.

I am about to try to re-install DVD Architect and Vegas to see if I get them back.

Has this ever happened to anyone before? (I did a search and found nothing).

thanks

Liam

Wow... that was a blast. NOT!

I first re-installed Vegas. No Dice... still had same problem
I removed and then installed Vegas from scratch.... got a different problem (although I enabled it and registered the thing came up telling me that the MPEG format had expired or something)... so still no dice.

I then removed everything (Vegas + DVDA) and re-installed it all. Re-entered serial numbers again and re-registered everything again.

Thankfully... that did it.

Still none the wiser as to why on earth that hapened.

Oh well.

You installed Sound Force 7 in the Sonic Foundry folder, didn't you? There's a thing where if you install any of the new Sony names products in the SF folder the SF stuff doesn't work right anymore. If you uninstall SF7 and re-install it to it's default folder, you should be ok.

Sony/SofO has pulled a fast one on us. I installed Sound Forge 7 to its own folder but put the common plugins in the SoFo folder. Lo and behold, my MPEG and MP3 codecs were gone!! Doing an uninstall didn't help either, because the install software for SF7 had quit asking what folder I wanted things installed to, it assumed my frst choices!! I finally went into the registry and deleted the Sony entries, whichm by the way, were NOT uninstalled by uninstalling Sound Forge 7. Now, after reinstalling everything, it asked me what directories I wanted and everything is right with the world. Turns out SF7 uses UNICODE for the MPEG and MP3 files, while the older SoFo files use DBCS...and the two are NOT COMPATIBLE.

So, SONY, next time give us a warning or don't give us the choice to change default directories. Nice little trap, eh?

Any regular reader of the forum would of known this about a month ago. It's not a trap. There have been threads about this (just 3-4 alone on the Vegas-Video forum), a listing in the support section, and several posts be Sony people saying "oopes, sorry!".

What more could you want? A personalized letter? They did after all have it default to a different directory then SoFo.

We have some kbase articles on this issue but you're right, this info needs to be more up front...and we'll be modifying our website shortly. Sorry for the hassle-

Yep... that is exactly what I did. Made the "assumption" that any shared plug-ins would be common across this product as well as the other vegas/DVDA products I had... although after installing I had a little nagging feeling that "why would Sony default to putting the shared plug-ins in a different directory". SO I then decided to check out the Sound Forge forum and found the reference to this "feature" and how you really do have to install them to their own directory. I then uninstalled SOund Forge and re-installed it using the defaults.

At that time I did not realize the impact it would have with the MPEG stuff in Vegas (I had read about it impacting some MP3 stuff).

ANyway... I did think that what I had done (installing SF7) may have been relevant which is why I mentioned it.

Thanks for clearing it up.

If you wanna heara a funny story... :)

I was working on some stuff to be rendered to Mpeg-2 for DVD. I rendered a couple short movies (3-4 minutes). Then I needed to render a song to be played on the DVD (no vidoe).

I plopped the song onto the timeline, selected it as a region, then tried to Render. ALL my mpeg templates were gone. So were all my AVI, RM, Quicktime, etc. I was thinking "WTF!" I close, opened Vegas. same thing. Rebooted. Same thing. I wsa panacing. I needed the DVD for the next morning and that's why Isaved the songs until last: no video was neaded.

Then it hit me: The templates were gone because there was no video to render! Only audio! :)

I had to put a black picture on the timeline above the song to get what I wanted. :)

So, note to sony: When rendering to audio only, have it automaticly add a black screen image so that it doesn't freak me out! :)

Now I laugh at that.
