Since DVDs are MPEG2, and your project isn't so long that you'll have to worry about optimization, i'd go straight to MPEG2. Choose the appropriate 'DVD Architect' template when you render and then DVD Architect won't have to re-render your video.

I rendered 1 segment to avi and same segment to mpeg2 intending to put both in DVDA to compare quality side by side. When I input the mpeg2 into DVDA along with the AVI - the audio wasn't there in the mpeg but was in the AVI. Am I doing something wrong?

Also, my project is very close to the limit of an hour. What would you recommend if it is beyond the capacity?

The DVD Architect templates do not include audio. Render the audio separately as a .AC3 file with the same name.

The limit is a lot closer to 85 minutes so you've got quite a bit of wiggle room. Once you get up to that limit then i would render to DV .avi, then let DVD Architect optimize it to fit when it converts to MPEG2.
