I would like a corner section of my video screen to be transparent. A box shape would be fine. I see where I can use the border plugin to make the all of the surrounding edges of the screen transparent, but I only want this effect on one corner, not around the entire screen. Any suggestions?
Okay, here's what I am trying to accomplish. I have a video that has a network logo in the bottom right corner of the screen. I have that same video from another source with the network logo at the upper right corner of the screen. The goal is to render the video with no logo. So I thought if I could make the corner transparent on one of the videos, I will line up the other video right underneath it on my timeline and the result will be the video with no logo. I hope this makes sense.
Apart from the technical stuff, stations put logos up there for a very good reason - word to the wise, do you have the authority to remove the station's logo? - It would appear, from what you are saying you also have the same clip with the station's logo, but in the top right hand corner . . did they do clips with logos in these two positions in two separate identical clips . . hhhmmm interesting . . .
I do understand what you are trying to achieve, my only concern is that which I've alluded to above . . ..
Best regards,
Grazie
. .. Now, where did I put my books on copyright law? . . ..
Your post makes no sense. Permission to remove logo? Copyright laws? Where in my post do I say anything about selling my rendered video to anyone? Logos drive me crazy. It's like placing a logo on a painting or any other art form. I prefer to watch my videos in the comfort of my home without logos. There is nothing illegal about that. This is a technical forum and your introduction of a non-technical discussion is not only inappropriate, but I am offended that you assumed I was asking this question to somehow break the law. Your request for an explanation of what I was using it for was supposed to help determine a solution, not an excuse for a lecture that has absolutely nothing to do with my question.
d1970tunes,
Could you place a PIP over the logo of the bottom clip from the clip with the logo in the opposite corner? Line up the clips as you indicated above, use the cookie cutter on the top clip (FX), postion the PIP box in the upper clip over the area that has the logo in the bottom clip. Select cut out all but section in the PIP box. This should overlay the same background in that section of the top clip over the logo in the bottom clip. Hope that works. You can probably do something similar using track motion on the top clip (vice PIP) also by just reducing the frame size of the top clip down to that section that you want to show over the logo on the bottom clip.

"Where in my post do I say anything about selling my rendered video to anyone?" - you don't and I didn't say you were going to. I just wanted you to be careful . . . . that's all . . . but now I do see you have a solution and I wish you well,

Doug,
This is your first post with us. Welcome to the Vegas Users Community. This forum is for helping other Vegas users in both a technical and non-technical ways. Try not to be offended when well intentioned users who have been posting here for a while remind a new users that its easy to break the law when capturing content you don’t own the rights to. We all agree you are not doing anything wrong by removing the logo for your own personal viewing. Grazie was just making sure you were aware of this. I do the same thing every time someone asks how to rip a DVD. It happens here all the time. So please don’t be offended. Not everyone is as honest as you.
The suggestion to use a cookie cutter with the Cut away all but selection option should work fine. You will only need to add the cookie cutter to the upper track and leave the lower track alone. You may need to add a border to the cookie cutter temporarily to see where the cookie cutter is while positioning it (because both videos are identical) and then remove the border before closing the dialog after you position it over the lower track's logo. I can send you a VEG file that shows you how to do this if you’d like (I just tried it with generated media and it works fine).
Alternately you could try and remove the logo from one of the videos. There is a program called VirtualDub, which has an excellent DeLogo filter plugin that will blend the logo with the background. This might come in handy in the future when you don’t have two sources with logos in opposite corners. I hate those logos too. ;-)
Once again, welcome to the forum (we’re really not that bad once you get to know us).
Thanks JR and everyone who offered suggestions. I will work on this today and let you know how it turns out. I recall looking at the cookie cutter plugin but I could not immediately figure out how to position the X and Y axis to focus on a specific section of the video. I have Vegas 3.0 and I hope your recommendation isn't only available in 4.0 or it may be time for an upgrade.
Also thanks for explaining why Grazie posted the way she did. I misinterpreted the tone of her post where it focused only on illegal activities and nothing about the situation at hand. I agree that new users to Vegas need to reminded about how their hobby can be turned into something illegal if they do not understand copyright laws. But maybe her post could have been better served without using passages like, "Do you have the authority to remove the station's logo?". It implies that just by removing a logo your are doing something illegal. I shared her post with others and they reacted the same way. The questions is, "Do we have authority to work with video we recorded from TV in general". Of course, the answer is "yes" as long as it remains in our homes for our personal enjoyment. An ideal response could have been, "So you are working on video recorded from TV. Not that this is your intent, but we like to remind our contributors that working on copyrighted video can be sensitive if you are planning on using the results for anything outside of your personal enjoyment. That said, I am unsure how to accomplish your goal. But I'm certain others can offer some suggestions. Good luck!".
Definitely removes the accusation element and deals with the broad concept of copyright in general instead of a discussion about the "authority" to remove logos.
d1970tunes, thanks for clarifying it is for your own personal use. Having not read any of your posts here before I was not sure how aware you were of these matters. No offence meant or intended - just concern.
Okay - so the authority is that which all of us have in using a station's output, logoed or not, and that it is for our own purposes? And we have the same "rights" to remove those logos? You have assisted me in clarifying something that has concerned and bothered me for a long time. Much appreciated - really. I'll keep your suggested "response" on file so I can "help" others in the future.
How's the actual "removal" going?
Oh yes I'll let into a big secret - I'm a bloke, of the male kind - But hey, you weren't to know that from my post ;-)
You’re welcome. Grazie is a guy ;-) and I agree he offered a warning without a solution so that could be suspect, but he’s been up late editing the past few nights so he’s probably really tired. (gosh its scary how you know what people you’ve never met are doing half way around the world. I been hanging at these forums too long), and yes the cookie cutter works the same way in Vegas 3. Here’s a step by step:
Step 1: Drop the video with the logo at the bottom of the screen on the timeline Step 2: Right-drag the video with the logo on the top of the screen to a track above the previous video. From the popup menu select "Video only->Add Video Across Time" (this eliminates the audio track) Step 3: Add the "Cookie Cutter->Picture-In-Picture" Video FX to the top video (this should hide both logos already!) Step 4: Adjust the size and position if needed to complete cover the logo Step 5: Remove the border by adjusting it to zero
You’re done! Hope this helps.
What is scary is that at one time on the Harry Fox Agency web site, they claimed that home video users do not have the right to sync music with video without a sync license! This was a claim they went out of their way to express. Here is the text:
The recorded use of music in combination with visual images ("synchronization") does not come within the scope of the compulsory license provisions of the U.S. Copyright Act. Licenses for use of music in films and in conjunction with
I think its safe to say that the copyright laws defy logic so if something seems outrageous, it’s probably true. :( Harry Fox no longer handles sync rights, but copyrights in general are a very scary thing and cannot be interpreted without a lawyer.
Thanks JR - Yeah, nearly put the "suckker" to bed now. I just keep coming up with a few more tweaks and improvements. How can 30 minutes of finished stuff take 2 weeks!!!!
There is a tool that does exactly what you want to do. I do it all the time for video that I record off the air and want to permanently archive to DVD.
You want to use the Delogo filter, which can be loaded with Satish's PluginPac filter. Click on the link to my previous posts on this subject for more details:
BTW, for all the people in this forum that seem to want to jump all over anyone that does anything with copyrighted material, I hope everyone understands that taping (or archiving to DVD) video that is broadcast over the air, cable, or satellite for one's own home use is perfectly legal. Whether removal of the obnoxious logos, when done for one's own personal use, constitutes copyright infringement is, at best, a rather fine legal point. I guess it would be a fun topic to argue in a legal forum, with people who actually have law degrees.
Works like a charm. Thanks for the detailed instructions on the cookie cutter! I do see a limitation in it's usage if:
1. Either one of the videos change speed regularly (IE: getting the frames to always sync up perfectly would be a nightmare).
2. The texture/brightness is different between the videos. Although the contrast and brightness options can make it closer, it's impossible to get a perfect match.
Thanks to those contributing the Delogo information. I have used related tools and they are okay when there isn't much activity in the video. I think using each method is useful depending on the particular video.
Sorry for the gender confusion Grazie.
I think it is correct to say that copyright issues are best left with lawyers. Although I'm certain lawyers would be the first to admit that it is even confusing for them to figure out for all situations. If a company would like to challenge any of us for our personal use of videos, then they must have lots of time and money on their hands.
