My Vegas Won't Read .mp4 files

Hi,

I've been having this problem for about 3-4 weeks now my Sony Vegas 9.0 Platinum Editionb won't read./import .mp4 files. At first I just thought it was because my trial version was about to expire and it was having issues which was fine since I love the program and was going to buy it anyway. However since getting my Pro Pack from Amazon.com it has continued. I just checked to make sure my Quicktime player software is updated and it is. I'm hoping that you can please help me get Vegas to read .mp4 again. When I first had the trial version it read .mp4 fine but now it has just stopped. My raw footage from my Flip Ultra HD camcorder shoots in .mp4 so if I have to convert my files to a different codec each time before being able to edit it's going to start eating up my time and become very annoying. The error message reads as follows Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files. The reason for the error could not be determined.

I have tried reinstalling the codec that did not work & I know that a system restore might but it'd be a total guess as to how far back to take vista (Ultimate 32 bit) as I don't know the exact date the problem began so if anyone knows a way to fix this issue without one that would be great. Thank you in advance for your help.

Raz

What codec?

Download MediaInfo and post the details about your files. There should be an easy solution. Here is a link to a tutorial on pocket camcorders and Vegas:

Here is a link to a screen cap of what media info said since I wasn't sure what it all means.

Your screencap says it opens with a PSP codec? I don't know what your doing, but if you'll upload a raw clip from your Flip somewhere I'll have a look at it.

Yeah I found that to be very strange too because I don't do anything but take it from the camera directly & as far as I know you can't change how it records.I will record a small clip & get back to you with an upload asap thanks for all your help.

Here you go musicvid just a very short clip for you to have a look at. The audio sucks because I'm handicapped & always fix my audio during editing but it was just taken directly from the camera so you should hopefully have what you need to try & help me out.

Off topic warning....

musicvid, did you know you can shorten the url you linked into THIS by using url=<really long url> ] <what ever you want>?

It's shown as an example in the second sticky thread at the top of the forum. LINK

Sorry for the intrusion..... carry on....

Very strange update to give musicvid it seems as though it's only longer footage that presents an issue I just shot a few short clips & they all went into Vegas fine but that original long vid shown in mediainfo still will not very very weird.

Yes, I know that and usually do (see the tutorial itself for several examples)
I didn't do so this time because I was short of time.

The video you uploaded opens just fine in Vegas Pro 8.0c with Quicktime version 7.6 installed. The engine for your Vegas version is the same.

Perhaps a reinstall of Vegas is in order for you if you are on a "compatible" version of Quicktime.

Your video shows "PSP, Japanese, Japanese" on my MediaInfo also. Very strange, so this particular clip may not have come straight from your Flip, but got converted somehow. Good luck.

Thanks for your help musicvid. Seems as though for now I just have to use shorter clips & then put them together to make a longer vid. Almost like editing before editing annoying but doable. As for the clips all of them long or short came straght from my Filp so perhaps it's a reading error on Flip's part when it exports from the cam into my computer I don't know. At least with the short clips I have a temporary solution for now. Thanks again for all your effort to help.

Sounds like the same problem as folks (like me) have had with the GoPro HD Hero which also outputs mp4 files. SVMS9 doesn't recognize these mp4s if they are bigger than ~ 2gb. Somebody over on the GoPro forum said he sent Sony a file and they verified the problem. Dunno if/when a fix. I convert all GoPro files to .avi with NeoScene to avoid the problem (and others). Or, as you note, shoot smaller clips.
