Navigating around small changes made between Vegas 21 and 22

Eli-Oklesh wrote on 8/1/2024, 2:47 PM

Hi! I just upgraded from Vegas 21 to 22. There are a couple of new layout features that I would like to change back if possible.

1) In Vegas 21 on the Explorer tab, the folder hierarchy used to be clickable in the main search bar. Now it just shows the path of the folder I'm using, and the folders are only clickable along the left. Is it possible to get the clickable folders back in the main search bar? (Muscle memory)

2) Also in Explorer, in 22 I could click on a random mp4 file, then click a button on the keyboard to cursor to the mp4 I am looking for. For instance, if I'm looking for a burp sound effect, I would click 'b' on the keyboard and be more easily able to find the burp mp4. Now the keyboard appears to be disabled in 22. How can I get that feature back?

In this same topic, there was a minor change that affects my workflow.

The Beat Detection function was added to the right click menu of a media event with the shortcut D. The thing is Delete also uses the D shortcut - and now when I right click and press D, instead of deleting the clip, I have to select the right one, adding one step to this proccess. Is there any way to change this new shortcut?

It might not sound like a big problem, but a few years ago I learned that the combination of right click + D is much more efficient when you have to do a lot of actions in a project than pressing Delete, mainly because you don't have to move your hands at all using this shortcut. If I have to press delete, I usually let go of the mouse for a moment to do that.

Yep, & where has the alpha gone in the thumbnails? They've all got a black background instead of the chequered alpha.

@Eli-Oklesh  ... If you want to use the former Vegas Explorer window, it's still available in Vegas Pro 22. Go to Options/Preferences/Deprecated Features (tab) and the bottom itme in the list is 'Enable Legacy Explorer). Select it, hit Apply and then OK, close down and restart Vegas Pro and then click on the View menu. The Legacy Explorer window is now selectable in the Window selection of the View menu.

@Dexcon

Thanks 👍, big dilemma now, the old Explorer was slow to load thumbnails, that always bugged me a little, the new one is a lot lot quicker to load thumbnails, much more like I would like it to be. 😏😂 I guess I can just have both docked.

-----------

I can't get Windows Layout to save with both Explorer tabs docked. I switch to my old layout & then back to the newly created one with both Explorer tabs & the old Explorer is closed, even if I restart Vegas the new Explorer window is there by some kind of default & the old explorer is closed. It seems it's either one Explorer tab only,

I'll stick with the new Explorer as it's much quicker to load & drag those png's files etc from Windows Explorer on my other monitor.

You're right - same here - and rather unexpected. Otherwise, agreed that it would be really good if the alpha channel was displayed as in the old Explorer window.

There seems to a difference in the way the new and the old explorer windows interrogate Windows Explorer. The new Vegas explorer window seems to directly access the Windows explorer window where the alpha channel likewise doesn't display even when going directly to the Windows explorer window (i.e. not via Vegas Pro). In Windows explorer window, I couldn't find an option in the View menu options to show alpha channels.

But, yes, the much swifter populating of thumbnails - including 4K .mp4 media - in the new explorer window is a hugely useful improvement.

Dexcon - Just ran into a small issue with this method. For some reason when I go to refresh the folder in the legacy explorer, it just blanks out the entire explorer and I have to reopen it. My refresh method is to use the little circular arrow in the upper right corner of the explorer. Any ideas for how to get that to work?

Eli-Oklesh wrote on 8/2/2024, 8:42 AM

Sorry, left out a piece of important information. When I click refresh, it just takes me to a folder called ROOT, which is blank. It should just refresh the current folder. Not sure if I can set that ROOT folder in a setting somewhere.

Dexcon wrote on 8/2/2024, 9:11 AM

I get that result too. Just testing it out, it looks like that you can only have one Explorer window selected at the same time in View/Windows.

@Dexcon Yep/no Windows explorer doesn't show the alpha but there is a difference between png & jpg, I think if Vegas Explorer showed similar it would be better than just a black background for all.

IMO the alpha channel of png files with alpha channel is shown correctly in the new explorer, it's not black as stated, but just shows the background colour of the explorer, which is shining through. It's in fact more logical as the chequered alpha in the deprecated explorer.

Gid wrote on 8/2/2024, 12:08 PM

@3POINT But the background isn't black it's grey.

---------------

Ok something weird is going on with my PC, normally I only ever open Windows folders on my second 24", this is what I would consider correct with the png having a light grey background, but as soon as I drag it onto my 32" no1 monitor it changes to both png & jpg having a black background, If Vegas is opened on my 2nd monitor it still shows a black background, GPU driver is up to date & PC has been restarted. 🤔

---------

@3POINT Would you show what this picture of yours would look like with the Dark UI colour pls?

----------

It's something to do with the Display settings, the 2nd monitor that shows the Windows folder png with a grey background is at 100%, the no'1 monitor is 150%, if I change it to 100% the Windows folder shows the png correctly with a grey background, Vegas still shows a black background.

In the normal dark UI, the png shows exactly the same, the dark UI shines through. For that reason I switched to the light grey UI to see if it has also a dark background. Which is not the case.

Maybe it depends on the png.file. I created the png.file with Vegas.

Sr_Garcia wrote on 8/2/2024, 1:20 PM

Personally, I don't like AT ALL the new Explorer .

If you have saved several types of video sequences in different directories, it is very difficult to locate them quickly to integrate them into the edition.
I find it problematic and ineffective to navigate through it.

The option to access the Legacy Explorer at first "seems" good but:
- If you update the files it contains, they all disappear. You have to restart it to be able to access them again
- You can't save in "Window Layout":
- The activation of the Preview is not memorized as it was before: it disappears with each action

I don't know which option is the worst... 😕

Gid wrote on 8/2/2024, 1:28 PM

@3POINT I rolled back my drivers twice. no change (back to the latest driver now)

but ..

Maybe it depends on the png.file. I created the png.file with Vegas.

Yes that does make a difference, Titles & Text - Save snapshot to file does show correctly.

But something very weird, I dragged that snapshot to the timeline & saved a snapshot of that (called is second') both pngs now show a black background 😵,

& Favorites folder doesn't refresh but now also shows black, 🤷‍♂️ (I've seen the favorites folder not refreshing a few times in 22)

----------------

I deleted those Snapshots from the Windows folder & now no VP explorer folder will not show the thumbnails, I've seen this before also so i know how to fix it, I either restart VP or close the VP Explorer window to correct it.

I'm okay with learning the new explorer window. But I have folders with upwards of 90-100 mp4 files. I'd like to be able to use the keyboard to jump to a particular letter. Helps me find things faster. Why someone would remove that is beyond me. Does anyone know of a setting that could scratch that itch? Or how we can ask the devs to add it?
