Need advice on DVD recorder

We have a couple of fairly expensive analog video cameras for a specific project (don't ask!) and need to be able to record simultaneously to NTSC VHS and directly to mpg (mpeg1 and mpeg2). Many of the clips will go on a CD. Occasionally we will need to go to avi.

We have the VHS hooked up but need to purchase the appropriate digital recorder. We don't want to go through any conversions from VOB or DAT files and would like to just go directly to mpg because the turnaround time has to be fast. Is this possible? What model?

Any advice appreciated.

Others on this board will no doubt know of real-time MPEG2 boards that can be used. I'm curious to know whether the Hitachi disk camcorder could be used in this context--it records MPEG2 to a little DVD-R disk.
