Need Help - avi vs. mpg

I don't know anything about Video Formats (Containers and Codecs). I have some strange / magical conversions going on. I'm looking for some detailed advise, please.

I have completed several two and three hours videos (on 2 and 3 discs) and 'usually' the first 2 of 3 or the first of two are saved as Movie clips (.mpg) while the the others are saved as Video clips (.avi) ?

The average avi video clip is about 12 to 13 GB. The .mpg's are reduced to 2,5 to 3 GB. I don't know how this happened / how I did this ? On the other hand - when trying to save the 12 GB .avi version onto a 256 GB Flash Drive it tells me the size of 12 GB is too large for the destination file system !?

How do I change an .avi to an .mpg ?

musicvid10 helped me out many years ago with a 'kind of similar' problem when he sent me his postings from some ten years ago and I was able to solve my problem then however, that was a long time ago and when I open the 'MediaInfo' today (I'm still using VP9) I don't even understand the desired export format.

I would really appreciate your help on how to change avi to mpg.

Thanks.

Stef

I am no computer expert but here's my two cents.

For the 12 GB is too large for the destination file system, the only thing I can think of that would cause that is the formatting on the 256 Flash Drive. Is it FAT or NTFS? You could try hooking the flash drive to your computer, right clicking, then when it comes to Format, make sure it is NTFS and see if that solves it. Just my first thought.

I've always had problems with AVI files. If you can open the AVI files in Vegas, and I don't see why you couldn't, then you would simply simply render them out of Vegas as .mpg file. Just go to File > Render As > and pick your poison. Most likely one of the Main Concept AVCs. You can also try different ones to see if one gives you a better result than the others. When you go to Render, make sure under Properties, you change Full resolution rendering from Good to Best. Never hurts to do that.

One of Vegas' strengths is the range of rendering options it gives you. The options are much clearer than some other programs. Also, if you notice an = sign by one of the Rendering options, that means Vegas feels it is a good match.

The biggest concern is that when you transcode from AVI to MPG there might be some quality loss, so you'll just have to keep an eye out for it.

Just my thoughts.

Your flash drive is almost certainly formatted as FAT32, which can handle a very limited file size. Change the format to NTFS by doing the following:

Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs.

We do this with every flash drive we purchase.

If you want the flash drive to work with both Mac and PC, substitute exFAT for ntfs in the command line.
