Need Help dubbing betacam tapes

epirb wrote on 10/7/2005, 7:13 PM
I have some betacam tapes supplied to me by a client with footage I can use.
Problem: I dont have a betacam deck
I'm willing to pay someone to transfer them to a format I can use.
either to DV or or maybe YUV something to keep the quality as high as possible. I am mainly editing and shooting in HDV and I'd like to be able to intercut between the two. Even though I know the Betacam footage is 4:3 .
I dont know whats best a straight Dub or someone to capture the tapes in Vegas, and then just to render them out to YUV files...?or what.

Not really sure how to go about it since my experience with
Pro formats is nil.

Any suggestions or people out there that could do that?

Check your yellow pages and give a few places a call. I get national stuff on BetaSP, and I cant justify the expense of a BetaSP deck, so I take it to a larger place than I am (me just little fish in great fishpond of life), they dub it down to miniDV for me for $30, I then capture the miniDV to computer, add the tag stuff and then print to tape. Happily, local Comcast accepts miniDV as a format, so I don't have any expense with going back to BetaSP (though this is apparently a local deal - Comcast in some other areas of the country only accept BetaSP).

If you are near Orange County, California - I can help you. Have 5 Betacam Decks in the Edit Bay.

What do you think is the best format to dub to, or even avi if I sent you an ext hard drive.?

I have a buddy at a local station that dubbed for me (until I got my own deck) however you may wish to try your local television stations, they can dub just about any format to any format with a push of a button. Whether most will offer the service, not sure. I just may be lucky.

As for format to dub it to? I would imagine you need a format that you can play. Mini-DV is probably going to be your best option.
