Need help using vob file

I videoed a presentation about a fire trajedy. The speaker used a PowerPoint presentation for the main part of the presentation but he used a video (not in PP) at the beginning. He transferred the video to my external hard drive so that I could use it in the video. However the video was a .vob file and Vegas (7 or 8) will not import it and use it on the time line. I know that you can import directly from dvds and it can use those vob files as I have done that. What am I missing that it will not use this vob file from the hard disc?
I can play the file in Media PLayer Classic. I have even tried to use Super to convert the file to an .avi but I can't get that file to work. Any ideas? TIA

i normally just rename it to .mpg, then it works fine.

could have ac3 audio in it. then something like dvd decrypter would work best with it. it can convert the audio to something vegas can read.

Open the VIDEO_TS folder in Vegas Explorer, select the VOB you want, and drag it on to the timeline.

No Video_TS folder, just a VOB file in the Project media (also does not have a thumbnail like most other media do). Will not drag to timeline. Have tried renaming the extension to .avi with no results.

How big is it? If you can post it somewhere and give me a link (use my email), I'll take a look. I've posted, in the past, all sorts of tricks for using VOB files on the timeline. You can search in this forum using my user name and "VOB" as the search term.

Vegas isn't very good about handling VOBs, but despite that, I've never failed to eventually get it to work. Usually the problem is getting the sound synced (often because of AC-3 delay) or getting more than a few minutes to show on the timeline. I don't think I've ever had a VOB fail to show up on the timeline at all (I'm using 7.0d).

Do you have any DVD Player software on your computer (e.g., WinDVD, PowerDVD)? If so, drop the VOB on that, and then see if the software shows any additional audio tracks, or any subtitles. That might be a problem, and if so, you'll need to demux.

Also, if this was from a commercial DVD, then the VOB is encrypted, then you can't use it in Vegas.

i use badgerit's vob2mpeg software...that program and dvdshrink are awesome for pulling content off of dvds and then converting content to a vegas usable form

Well, after playing with it for awhile (in Super & G-spot) I went back to the original vob (I think) and tried dropping it in Vegas 8 agiain and low and behold it worked??? The phase of the moon must have shifted. So I am now over that hump, at least temporarily. The next speed bump is taking his power point presentation that features text slides and linked or embedded audio and converting it into a usable form so I don't have to use what I taped off the screen. He gave me his PowerPoint presentation but it does not seem to have any of the audio that went with it. These are critical radio broadcasts between firefighters caught in whaht turned out to be a fatal situation and their rpotential rescuers. Dramatic and heart rending stuff. I could use the audio off of the video that I recorded but it is not real clear and it would be much better if I could use the actual audio recordings. If I can get these from him I will then have to try and figure out how to relink them to the PP and tyen get them into a video format.

I believe you could play the PPT full-screen and capture video and audio using Camtasia Studio (has fully functional 30 day free trial). Never done it, don't know what the format of the capture is.

If the PPT doesn't have any animation you can just save the slides as individual jpg or png files right from the Powerpoint Save As... menu and drop them on the Vegas timeline. Otherwise if there is animation, use Camtasia or any free screen capture program to make it into a video as suggested above.
