Need help with crash on scanned image

Jeff9329 wrote on 6/5/2009, 6:59 AM
I am working on a NTSC DVD widescreen project that either locks up or the Vegas 8.0c application completely closes itself when it reaches some scanned images which get panned.

The initial 1920 X 1080 HD video renders fine, then exactly on the transition to the scanned images, it crashes.

To create the image pan (it's a recital program page) I put the image(s) on the timeline, then use the pan/crop button. Then for preset, use the 16:9 ratio to get the crop box to the correct size. Then set up the pan.

One time while setting up the pan, I got a red box where the image should have been, followed by a crash.

Any advice?

What's the pixel size and total size of the scanned image?
What file format is it?

3280 Wide X 5128 Height natively. 5.59 MB

The file is a JPG saved from a Photoshop scan & edit.

The pan goes from the top of the image straight down to pan the text.

The crop box preset is 16:9 and I pulled the crop to the edges of the native image, so it is seeing 3280 pixels of native material.

Reduce the resolution (using your photo editor) to no more than your project resolution (1920x1080) times the zoom factor (the most you will be zooming into the image) plus about 10%. This will fix your problem. ALL versions of Vegas have crashed when fed still photo images much larger than 2000x3000 (and even that could make Vegas choke). The new V9 is supposed to finally fix this problem, but I haven't seen any definitive test results that confirm that this is fixed.

As long as you have to open, reduce the resolution, and then save the image in PhotoShop, save it instead as a PNG image. I am not convinced this makes much difference (you definitely do NOT want to save it as TIF because Vegas uses a service outside of Vegas to handle the image, and this can cause problems). PNG is supposed to be the "native format" for Vegas. I use it when I can, but generally have no problems with JPG. However, when doing the down-res (which I usually do as a batch operation) I always save as PNG. This has the added advantage when batch converting a bunch of JPG images that I can instantly see which files are intended for Vegas, and which ones are the originals.

In Photoshop, set the image sizes to something like 2460x3887 and save as .png

You guys are awesome, I reduced the width to 1920 and maintained aspect ratio on the native files so the height would be correct..

The file size dropped to about 1.5 MB

It works great! This is due today, so I was freaking out, it was supposed to be so simple, until the render.

Thanks again.

Those big image files eat up your available memory unnecessarily, so I keep them close to screen dimensions, with a little "wiggle room" as John suggests. Vegas is superb at resampling stills, so they don't have to be at exactly your project dimensions. PNG is easier on memory than JPG.

I have created a huge panorama photo using Autopano Pro: 28473 x 7201 pixels, 180 ppt, 28.2 MB, jpeg.

I can preview a pan from left to right in Vegas 9 (32 bit) without problems: Project DV PAL Widescreen, 25 fps with preview auto. Specs: i7 with 12 GB ram.

Joran:

My project would preview beautifully with the larger files.

But during render, the instant it would hit the large image files Vegas would just disappear from an instant shutdown. Watching the performance tab on task manager showed nothing, just an instant release of resources.

So I am just saying, you will not know if it will render just by using preview. I also re-confirmed from flailing with Vegas for a while that your Vegas settings are critical to maximize render speed. The dynamic RAM preview even makes a huge difference in render speed on my machine (set to 256).

24 recital DVDs authored and out the door.

V9 will handle much larger still image files. It is one of the new features.

Jeff, I have rendered this 28.2 MB jpeg picture (panning) and some video files with effects (Mercalli and NeatVideo) without problems (PAL DV Widescreen) in Vegas 9 (32).
