Need help with external preview

I have a Nvidia GEFORCE 2 MX 400 64mb TV-OUT and I got it hooked up to my TV-set. I can watch movies, look at my desktop and everything, but what I would like to do view my preview monitor full screen on the tv.... I can't find that option....all I see is VEGAS and the rest of my desktop on the screen. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming you've extended your desktop onto the TV....

You can drag the preview monitor to the TV as you would any other window but this is not a true external preview. To use your TV as a monitor, you'll need a means of exporting the signal to the TV (i.e. firewire through a digital/analog source.) Digital 8 camcorders are great (and cheap) for this task. You'll need a 1394 firewire port on your PC. Pass the firewire through your camcorder (or something like the Canopus ADVC100) to your TV.
If you are still unclear, do a forum search, there are many threads on this topic with much better explanations than mine...

Thanks a lot for replying goshep.
Well I have switched my diplay mode to DUALVIEW and I drag the PREVIEW MONITOR to my TV MONITOR and simply expand the window so it fits on my TV.

Yet I thought there was a way that I can preview like if I were seeing a movie, in other words, I'm working on VEGAS and the tv automatically switches to full screen (for the preview monitor). I did read about the firewire method, yet is there any other way I could do it simply through the S-VIDEO cable coming from the video card to the tv's s-video input? Hope this all makes sense. Thanks again.

It makes perfect sense and is exactly how I tried to do it when I first started using Vegas. Unfortunately, for reasons that are beyond my understanding, it won't work that way. Fortunately for me, a very generous individual gave me a Digital 8 camcorder in perfect condition. Now I can use the camcorder as a pass-through and achieve what you are attempting. I wish I had an explanation as to why it doesn't work, as I understand your frustration.
Good luck.

Three ways to preview to external monitor in Vegas:

1. The preferred way, and the way Vegas is designed for, is to hook up a DV camera and use it's "pass-through" capability to display to an external monitor. You hook the DV camera to your computer via Firewire (1394) and then connect composite or S-Video from the camera to the monitor. Sound comes from your computer sound card (i.e., sound is not passed to the camera via the Firewire). When you click on the external monitor icon in Vegas (above the preview window), you will see your video from the timeline on the external display.

2. You can use the dual monitor capability, as was described in the previous posts, to set up your external TV monitor as an extension of your regular computer monitor. You can then drag the preview windows from Vegas onto the external monitor. This is probably the worst of the three methods, because I don't think you'll get a true representation of the interlacing, proportions, or color that you would get from a "real" monitor hookup.

3. You can use Mike Crash's TV Out filter which can be found here:

TV Out

This works well, but it has some limitations, which if you read the whole thread, you'll see that I describe them there (won't bother to repeat here).

I've tried methods 1. and 2. and while method 1. gives an excellent and accurate representation of what's in the preview window (assuming your external monitor is calibrated), the results using method 2. are typically fuzzy and oversaturated due to the nature of the scan converters used in most video cards. There may be some high-end video cards with high-end scan converters but I haven't tried any.

When I did this my preview screen became "lost". Yes lost - it was nowhere. I returned to single monitor mode and still no preview screen. To aid the search I closed all other windows so I had nothing but the timeline. The VIEW menue showed the preview screen but it just was not there. Like it got eaten by the other monitor. Had to reinstall!
