Need help with MPG format

Can someone explain why I am not able open any file that is mpg format? Am I missing a plug-in? I see the MPEG1 and 2 in the file types, but it says unsupported format? Does Batch converter address this problem?

The answer I've seen to this previously is that you have to use the main concept template to try and encode some video, which will then direct you to register it. I assume you haven't registered Main Concept yet. This could be the problem.
