Need Help With Simulating An Effect please :)

Hello guys and girls, I have been looking to replicate this Ripple Vide Effect with Vegas but can't seem to find anything like it. I believe that the producer uses Adobe and Afer Effects to make it.

It seem to be a mask on objects (body or any thing else with shape) but also as effect of its own like a media generated flow of ripples.

Here is a link for a video of that effect :

Could any one be kind enough to recommend an add on software for Vegas Pro or any tips on how to replicate this ripple effect.

Thank you!

The first thing you need is a video that contains the ripple or movement that you like. So you may need to film a swimming pool or a bucket of water or something.

Then you composite the clips together and use a displacement map FX in Vegas. What that does it allows the top clip to be controlled by the bottom clip. I used it to make a static shot ripple like flag in the wind and the it comes out pretty nice.

If you go to the vasst site, they should have a tutorial on this. There's a couple on youtube including:

You can also use the Generated Noise Media in Vegas to drive the Displacement Map. Just animate it using the Progress slider. No need for any plug-ins or add-ons. Vegas is extremely powerful once you get the hang of parent-child compositing.

Thank you for getting back :)

I did try dooing that with footage of water rippling, it does create a ripple effect but very diffrent from the one I'm talking about. This just ripples the whole image, its impossible to create the "ripple looking" movement around an object.

YES THATS IT! Thank you so much! I did use the media generator to create a marble effect, animate it and make it only in one main colour (the second one being transparent), In the COMPOSITING menu the best effect seems to be the Subtract option. It actually replicates exaclty what I want... lol But the only small thing is, its hard to work with generated media and make it specificly contour a moving person let's say.. thats my next question..

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING!! =)

I'm curious as to the effect you got. Can you post a clip online?

You'd need to isolate the object from its surroundings. Then you'd need a suitable bump map so that the ripples appear to emanant from the object. AE Pro with trackers would make the task much simpler, it's an application built for these kinds of effects. If you only need to do this once then you could do it in Vegas. If you're going to be doing a lot of this kind of work then AE would be a good investment along with the time to learn how to use it.

Aside from that, shooting the footage with the final outcome in mind makes the task so much easier. You can do anything in post, including going broke. Shooting the object you want to create the ripple around as a chroma key eliminates a lot of work. You still need a good keyer and AE gives you that. So even if you buy and learn AE, it still pays big dividend to plan, plan and test, test, test.

Kelly (chienworks) created a ripple effect a long time ago. His site doesn't appear to be up, so I hope he doesn't mind, but here is a short-term link (good for one week) to the file he created:

chienworks-water-ripples.zip

Here's another even simpler example:

V5_OceanWavesCloudsTitle.veg

I'm not sure who to credit for this one, but it was a freebie I downloaded several years ago.

you need 4 levels

1 png text or text tansition threshold appear
2 the same png underneath parent of 3 and 4 custom height map map set to what you need or key to animate the effect
3 water drop clip under that make child multiply mask
4 media generated clip light blue panel or graded panel make child

the map will warp the water drop rings to the shape of your png or text file then set your top png and transition a few frames after and it will apear as if your png is coming out of the water rings warping the water underneath
