Ah, you need to experiment with all the options and settings a lot more. You can create an emormous variety of images from what's available there. Don't let the existing templates make you think it's limited to only what's included. Combine layers, use keyframes, add effects, use custom compositing, the possibilities are nearly endless.
Some of the animations in my catalog are made purely with Vegas generated media and i've gotten a few comments from folks who couldn't believe that Vegas was capable of that.
go to www.vasst.com and search for Digital Film Slate - this is a project I put together back in the Vegas 5 days to test 3D track stuff that was new to Vegas at that time. It's a generated media transition but gives a good example as to how powerful Vegas in in creating animations. It's slower than some programs but for creating lower thirds and some backgrounds it's an amazing program that has better compositing tools than any other NLE out there.
Also, take the existing generated noise textures and apply fx to them, pixelate, newsprint, etc, you can get some great looks and backgrounds even just dirtying up existing footage.
