Need Real Player Comments

There's a bunch of new content online that I'm dying to see. Unfortunately, it's in the Real Player format. Care to share some updated reasons why I shouldn't install a player ? I heard it's a bugger load of spyware, adware, etc.

If I get enough warning here from the people I trust, I won't bother. The film I want to see, oddly enough, is a digital short by Mike Figgis that he did for Agent Provocateur.

Just curious if Real Player is still a pain....

If you find that Real is still a pain, here are some alternatives:

Check out VLC - http://www.videolan.org/

There's also a program, possibly free, called Real Alternative that plays Real files w/o all the junk.

Whenever you install something, choose "Custom." That will usually give you much more control. For example, it lets you stop Real Player from taking over the file associations.

However, the best thing to do is get Real Alternative and Media Player Classic from here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

Regarding "Custom" settings and real player: I've installed Real on several of my systems in the past and have given up. No matter what settings you choose (never check for updates, never do this...) in 2-3 months it's back doing the things you told it not to.

It actually checks for "updates" every 10 minutes (you can verify in zone alarm logs). Sorry, I don't buy the fact they are checking for updates. Also, just the thing you need for dropping frames during a capture.

I have litterally ran the real directory files through spybot's file shredder for a 20-times zero write to finally remove remnants of the files.

It's never been on my main editing system and it never will.

Hey now, Quicktime version ANY can be juuuuuuust as bad.

If you want to check something out then you should.
Don't let the player beat you ;)
go for the rp alternative.
