I've read alot of forums and still cannot understand. So I'm asking for step-by-step instructions for shooting, and editing 24p on HV20. Please be very specific.
How to shoot in PF24:
-----
1. Go to "P" mode (there's a physical switch in the camera)
2. Go to the camera's main menu and change "HDV" to "PF24". You are now in 24p mode.
3. Also in the camera's main menu, under display settings enable "zebra support". Select 100% zebra support. I would suggest you also turn on the markers (grid, grey), to help you with orientation while you are shooting.
4. Change from the defaul P program mode to shutter "Tv" mode and set the shutter speed to 1/48th. This is the shutter speed many Hollywood movies use.
5. Set the color settings of the camera to "neutral" (helps with color grading, if you are going to grade, Hollywood movies always are).
6. Point the camera somewhere, ensure that no zebra stripes are showing in the screen. If they are, it means that you are over-exposing, and in that case adjust the exposure compensation as shown in the manual of the camera (hint: by using the joystick).
7. Record.
Editing:
----
Case 1:
If you are ONLY going to do DVDs or write back to tape, then you simply edit using the HDV 1440x1080/60i project properties template. You don't edit as 24p. You edit and export as 60i (PF24 is wrapped in a 60i stream anyway).
Case 2:
If you are after exporting for the web or the PC (but not for DVD/tape), then you MUST remove pulldown, or you will have lots of ghosting in your movie, making it look ugly. And that's where all my links above come into play. You can either do it the right way, and follow the first link, the long tutorial (along the last 3rd and 4th link, but not the 2nd link), or, you take the shortcut, the 2nd link, and you do it the short way: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/06/30/faking-pf24-pulldown-removal-with-vegas The second link is the easy way of dealing with PF24 and pulldown removal, but you some lose quality (usually not very visible though, so many people prefer this easy way).
