Need Some Suggestions

Could somebody please give me a couple of suggestions on how to improve the video quality of my mpg2's?

I'm using DVA (of course), with Vegas 4.0. My computer is a Pentium 4 with 1.5 Gig of RAM. So it shouldn't be a computer issue.

After editing in Vegas I render using the MPG2 format and select the DVA compatible option. My video is fine unless you pan or someone moves. Then I get horizontal lines where the movement is. Something as simple as someone walking across the room waving their hands back and forth with cause this.

I don't expect my DVD's to look like Hollywood versions, but I would expect them to be as good as an AVI on my computer. At first I thought it might be a problem with the way I was capturing video. So I upgraded to a digital camera and used vegas to capture via Firewire. That didn't improve anything so I switched to USB 2.0. Still no luck. From what I have read, firewire to be plenty. So I figure it's not poor capturing equipment.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

David

Did I ask a stupid question?

I don't have any answers for you - only more questions.

How are you viewing the rendered video? Have you tried building a short project with a problematic scene, burning it to an RW and playing it back on a real DVD player? If you're playing it mpg on a computer, maybe the problem is with the playback software and not with the actual render.

What options have you selected for the render, CBR or VBR? VBR is usually better for fast action since the encoder is allowed to increase the bit rate to handle the movement.

Click on the custom button on the save as screen and try selecting "best" for video rendering quality.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. I will give them a try! My rendering quality was set to "good" and I had CBR selected.

Thanks Again!

Also, verify the "quality" slider is on 31 (the max value)

Are you using something like Media Player to view the output? If so, this will give you the effect you describe. You need to use a proper DVD player (into a TV), or a software player like PowerDVD to judge the final quality.
(I'm assuming the effect you describe is the interlacing artefact).

Thank you for all your suggestions. I check the slider and the VBR, changed the output to Best and burned it to a DVD.

You know what, you are right. I do not see the problems I had orignially experienced.

Part of my problem was the settings, but the biggest problem seems to be the fact that my mpg2 playback program enhanced every issue about 10 fold. So, I wasn't going to burn it to a DVD. In the end it seems, I DID ask a stupid question.

Thanks ScottW, Jetdv and Pete!
