I want to really bring my videos to life with special effects. I'm confused on where to start. ParticleIllusion 3.0 is cool, Adobe After Effects? Anything else out there that won't break my modest budget? Should I start with ParticleIlusion 3.0 or After Effects or something else? Help!
AlamDV 3 will be coming out soon, which is supposed to be a major improvement to the current version (which is quite good as it is) If you buy AlamDV2 you get a free upgrade to 3 when it comes out
I think that you have to be more clear in what you're looking for. Is Particle Illusion cool? (although I'm one of the Digit buyers... 2.0SE serves my needs nicely) You'd better believe it! Does After Effects do its job well? Absolutely. But then, Vegas 4 will do a great deal of what AE will do...
So, I have to ask, what do you feel you need to 'spice up' your videos?
Dholt,
I have to agree with David. Lots of capability in Vegas 4. Take a look at some of the vid's on Chienworks site. In particular, look at this one: http://www.vegasusers.com/vidshare/textdisp?invisible-musicvideofinal
It has some excellent effects and is cut to music very effectively. There are several like that on the site. Before you spend the money, explore the capability of Vegas 4. I'm impressed every day with how much it can do. Happy editing.

and download the film clip. After viewing it, click on the "Behind the Scenes" link to get all sorts of ideas of what programs are available to produce the effects you just saw.
I did a music video for a band called Eleven Days Of Rain. I used all vegas filters and effects. A bif part of the video, I chomakeyed in black, and there are several scenes near the end where I chomakeyed in storm clouds. Vegas does a great job, but it would be nice to have more:)
