Hmm:
http://www.toasterdudes.com/pages/3DACT.html

See the Earth Scenes section. Fulfillment is likely to be done through NewTek or their dealer network.

You need this product and LightWave, unless you already have LW....

Dont know about footage, but you could buy a globe and shoot it with a camera.

I am not sure whether you can use these without permission (although it is a government image, and you paid your taxes this weekend ...), but take a look at this site:

On the Visible Earth link johnmeyer provided: it looks like this is okay to use.

The second link from the top on that page describes terms of use. Give them a little credit and its yours to use.

Try logging on to Google Earth, zoom out so that you can see the whole earth and screen capture it using a program like SnagIt 7.

You can download and use SnagIt for free for a limited time but it's such a good program I bought it.

Didn't post it earlier because it's not finished ( could look better and didn't have enough time the last few months ), but might s well start off the free video section. It's 2.5 MB quicktime, should do the trick.

Did it myself, so it's free to use.

Surprised nobody has suggested Celestia
http://www.shatters.net/celestia/documentation.html
This will make AVIs of a highly sophisticated version of our entire galaxy and can include all Planets, objects and if you like astronomy, it may take you a couple of days before you remember why you downloaded this free program. There are many add ons they have for it too. Version 1.4.1 is the latest. I just made a 48 second uncompressed AVI of the spinning Earth and it only ate up 1.4 gigs of memory. LOL Lots of options and you can save in lesser quality codecs too.
It does look more like a high quality video game than actual pictures but everything is set realistically. You can speed up time to get the rate you want of a spinning planet

BluffTitler works great. Many people have a spinning Earth that you can use as a starting point .

google earth is copyrighted.. Celestia is great & so is worldwind. There's also orbitor, but that's a full 3d space shuttle simulator, not just outer space.

Have you tried Google Video?

You can easily make this yourself if you have Boris Red, Boris FX, or the free plugin called Wax from Debugmode. Find one of the many public domain cylindrical maps from NASA an map it onto a 3D sphere, set up your lighting as a point source, then rotate it. I do this all the time with Boris Red to create very realistic space scenes that I use in corporate logos and high-tech product marketing clips.

The NASA spinning globe link provided is free for public use but they request a mention. This is pretty standard for all NASA media...

As it should be, after all, they do all this with our money

As mentioned earlier, Celestia is a great, free program that allows for capture. It has a pretty realistic looking earth with or without clouds. You can speed it up or slow it down, etc. Google it.

goodtimes,

Since my own suggestions (I use WorldWind and Celestia) are included in the slew of replies above, no point being redundant. The reason I'm replying is that a lot of people have come here to give you a wide variety of suggestions.

It would be nice if you had the courtesy of at least saying "thanks." Call me old fashioned, Maybe some more pressing life issues are going on, if so, I understand.

But hopefully you'll swing by and acknowledge them. Am I being Netiquette preachy here? Probably. I just appreciate when people try to help me out here. A little kindness goes a long way,, Both ways.

Couldn't agree more. The lack of an acknowledgment makes one less inclined to help in the future and gradually the usefulness of this forum will deteriorate.

Fortunately there are some great guys here who must be very thick skinned.

Soniclight and Tim. WOW! Talk about rude! And yes you are being netiquette preachy here.

I posted for help this weekend then spend the enitre rest of the weekend out filming my ass off and *gasp* working. Then I come back to my beloved message board to see if anyone has posted and yes they have. But what's this? A couple of blowhard jerks with nothing better to do than patrol a message board and call random people out are on my tail. Are you kidding me? I don't even get a day or two on the weekends? I haven't even sat down for an hour at a computer before I logged on here to check out. Sheesh, sorry to have a life. How about you get one yourselves?

Check back on my history, I am definitely always thankful. I am sure you two will because obviously you have all the time in the world. Make sure you get some Funyuns, Donuts and Diet Soda for the job before you start!

And to the people who helped me, as usual, thanks a lot for helping me out. I was just about to plunk down 30 bucks for some stock footage and this did the trick great. As a matter of fact, I think the NASA footage is the exact same stuff that istockphoto is selling!
Soniclight wrote on 4/16/2007, 1:07 PM
goodtimes,

Easy does it, no point going off here. t was just an observation, and I did state and consider you being busy with something else in life. I also owned pontificating a bit. But calling me and Tim jerks is uncalled for. Civility isn't a crime. And speaking of which...

Thanks for the thanks. Hope your filimiing went well.
Case closed. NRN

There are so many reasons why people don't respond that I could fill pages just listing them. These include everything from what happened in this case, to deaths in the family or other emergencies. To simply ass-u-me that rudeness is the ONLY possible reason reveals not only an amazing lack of imagination but -- irony of ironies -- a certain, oh what shall I call it -- rudeness ??

If you look at posts just in the past few weeks, you will find one long-time member who just came back after very serious health problems, and another whose studio burned down. I'd sure hate to be in the emotional state those people must be in, only to come back to the forum and be called names.

I should also point out that part of what makes this form of communication so great is that even if the original poster never gets back to the thread again, everyone generally learns a lot from the exchange.

I certainly learned a lot from this one ...

goodtimes,

Apologies if any offence caused. I was simply adding some support to Soniclights observation that all too often people don't take the trouble to acknowledge answers. Whilst it was only a coupe of days in the case he cited (yours) and he was very careful to acknowledge you may not have been able to respond, all too often someone will post a query and if they haven't had a response within a couple of hours kick up a fuss about it.
I have plenty of things better to do with my time - trying to help others being just one of them. I just do those as well as being a jerk :)

Best wishes

"But calling me and Tim jerks is uncalled for"

And calling me out for no reason is uncalled for. How would you like a post like this:

Everyone on the message boards! Attention! Soniclight stole Vegas 7 from Best Buy!
That is, unless he paid for it, I really don't know, I'm just speculating.

See I can be accusatory without owning up to it as well. Just mind your business and I am guessing everything will be just fine.

Dreamline wrote on 4/16/2007, 4:06 PM
I could easily make you a 3d earth with your logo for free.

I have a 3d earth scene already setup that I just used for a DVD video. If you are interested just say so and we will work out the details.

If you already have it worked out then I'm glad for you.
Soniclight wrote on 4/16/2007, 7:33 PM
As stated, I left plenty of room open for alternative reasons why there was no posting by goodtime. It wasn't an accusation, just an observation: It was interpreted it as an accusation. I'm going to pass on what is rude or not rude due to some non-logical statements in this whole discussion.

However an opinion should be able to be expressed and discussed without resorting to defensive adolescent name calling and other non-professional use of language. This isn't some MySpace community or Don Imus show, so let's try to keep things a bit more civil.

And I'll probably get skewered for that small bit of common sense, too. This is getting old and I've got other things to do. I do have a life, too.
