In AVI? Wierd since Recode doesnt write to AVI file as it writes to the mp4 container. But if it is an avi file, you should be able to open it if you have the nero codec installed or even XVID or DIVX UNLESS it is an AVC file then you are out of luck.

i have the codec installed, Works in WMP.

Have you used GSpot to verify that it is indeed Nero's codec that was used?

Thanks, It indeed says it is a Xvid codec. WMP must report the wrong codec. Anyway, Vegas 5 still doesnt open it (recognizes the audio stream, but not the video). My solution was to use virtualdub (which recognized the codec), and render the portion i need to a compatible codec

thanks for the help

What happened was when you installed Nero, its decoder becomes the default decoder for Mpeg-4.

Glad you got the solution )

Not sure if this is what you need, but it might be.

I have Vegas 5 and Nero on a couple PCs. On one I found that I could open an Mpeg4 encoded avi in Vegas, but not on the other machine. I eventually figured out that I had installed the DivX codec on the one that worked.

I think this is it...

You might try that and see if it allows Vegas to load the avi.

this has been covered many times here - hint : change 4CC

B_JM,

Thanks, but I don't understand your hint about '4CC'

Can you be like John Meyer and point us back to a relevant thread or be more specific?

I went through B_JM's previous posts and it appears that he is talking about reseting an embedded AVI marker flag in the file header. He pointed the following URL to download a utility that lets you change this flag...

Four CC Code Changer

He suggested the following settings --

"Description code - DiVX3, FourCC code used - DiVX, for both XViD and DiVX"

Just as a note though -- I haven't tried this myself, so caveat emptor ;-)
