OK serves me right for venturing into unsupported settings in "Internal Preferences"... I record the experience here for posterity or for others to find when searching to fix their similar problem.
From the RenderTest.veg exercise, I had determined that for my 8-core machine, fastest render was with threads Min=4 Max=8. Had no problems using that in practice (real projects) up till now.
HOWEVER, just now tried using a ".veg" file as a nested project in very basic fashion then rendering (to mpeg2), but it crashed (repeatably) after just around half a minute. The ".veg" file itself rendered OK when opened as a project in its own right.
FIX: Putting the internal preferences for threads back to default (Min=1 Max=4) fixed the problem. Now the nested project works OK.
Details of project:
Is a multi-track project, tried to use it (.veg file) nested in another project, same formats (PAL widescreen). Set the latter off rendering (to mpg2). Crashed (Exception, detailed below) at frame 870 i.e. hardly any progress. Nothing significant at that point in either of the projects, not even a cut or marker.
Project Details:
Project was of just over 1 hour consisting of these tracks:
* HD (mxf) from EX3, only one of its (split stereo) audio track channels enabled (video and other audio channel muted)
* HDV (m2t) from Z1, only one of its (split stereo) audio track channels enabled (video and other audio channel muted)
* DV (avi) from TRV33 (video and audio channelsmuted)
* And a MultiCam track for duplicates of just their video tracks
* And a video track for text, currently muted.
