Nesting problems 64bit V9

I loaded up windows and don't have but 3 programs on it.
Loaded V9 64 bit to run and keep the system clean.

8 gig ram, q660 quad Intel motherboard.

Made one time line of AVCHD1280x720P clips about 1 hour worth, maybe 30 clips. Straight Cuts. 1280x720p time line.
Made 2nd program/time line of about 30 clips and 40 minutes of QT 1920x1080, straight cuts, some audio leveling, and timeline is 1280x720p.

Just trying to get out a long wmv clip with chapters for previewing.

Pretty simple.

I can work each program by itself, but there have been a few hiccups, but no show stoppers.

When I open the AVCHD time line then try to nest at the end the QT time line, Vegas just sits there seemingly chugging along for 20 minutes, but does nothing.

Have to force quit.

I don't pretend this is the way to edit with mixing AVCHD and QT, but there are times when I just want to take a bunch of native clips from the cameras and make a quick 1-2 hr piece for the computer in HD with chapter marks for navigation.

I've been using and selling computer editing systems for 20 years and it seems like we are going backwards in stability with all the editing programs.

Anyway, what's the opinion. Is this asking to much of the edit program?

Regarding the memory issue talked about in another post, (allow over 2GB for program) I'm assuming that is for 32bit?

Also, is the latest Vegas 9 update also just 32bit?
