network render - status=unavailable

well I've checked the other posts and can't quite figure this out.

vegas installed on main computer =XP. vegas render only installed on second computer = win2k server.

explorer can drag/drop files across the two and I can ping the render computer from the main computer.

run render client on both machines, both set to same (default) port and when I put in either the IP address or name of the render client computer, I get status of unavailable after a few seconds.

based on the other posts, this seems to indicate a connection problem (render client filled in http protocol in the URL field). have a router between the two and like I said, I can do other normal windows ops w/ them.

anyone have any suggestions to troubleshoot / fix this so I can keep trying?

TIA..

Are you running any kind of firewall on either machine?

Does the URL field really have http://... or is it really tcp://...? By default, it should be tcp.

PJM..no firewall...they are both connected to my firewall / router, but on the same side..no s/w firewalls on either pc. the http thing is a bit strange since I expected it to try tcp. I don't have any http server running on that machine so that may not be helping if it's really trying to http over. Any suggestions? I'd really like to network render....TIA again.

Two suggestions:

1) Make sure you're running Vegas 5.0b on all machines.

2) On your editing machine, delete all renderers then use the "Basic"
mode to re-enter them (I suspect you're using the "Advanced" mode but
there's no need unless you're running multiple render services on the
same machine or you've configured the services to use a non-standard
port or protocol. In "Basic" mode, you only enter the host name or IP
address rather than the entire URL.

Yeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Thanks!

I was out of sync on the versions 5.0b on my main computer but the initial release on the render machine. I think the upgrade did the trick. I did switch to the basic mode but my guess is that the version problem was it.

The two machines now see each other and a quick test showed the render agents were communicating!!

Now, on to setting up the file mappings...

Thanks again!!!!
