Network rendering?

DataMeister wrote on 4/19/2004, 2:43 AM
So, hypotheticly speaking. I wonder if the network rendering module will work on the trial/demo software. I'm not sure that its seeing the other computer on the network. Hypotheticly it seems to be wanting a serial number or something. But the hypothetical numbers (activation codes) don't seem to work.

Maybe that's something we can't try out untill we actually spend some money.

I am a little disappointed that you are only limited to 2 clients to render. While something is better than nothing, would have been nice to use six systems for renders. Still pretty impressive.

I wonder if the two client is a performance imposed limitation or a licensing limitation. If lincensing, then how much is is going to cost to upgrade to a 10 or unlimited license.

If it's performance based limitation, then I wonder what the technical reason is.

I'd say it's performace limited, that's a LOT of data to shuffle around on the fastest networks. You get a deminishing return as more resources are used up hadling the network traffic.

They said in the liscence that each registered cpoy of V5 lets you do 2 more computers on net-render. Would be nice if they offered a seperate net render that you could download. :) Hey' who knows!

A slow network and/or disk can certainly limit performance but our
choice to allow 2 extra render-only installations was not based on any
technical limitations.

Is it possible to share with us the reason 2 was the number that was decided on? I am not trying to pry just curious.

Network rendering should work for the duration of your trial period.

You can buy additional network rendering licenses. I don't know the prices.

Heres my question regarding network rendering. Now in the past, we were able to install VV on more than one computer provided that the program was only being used in the number of instances that you have a license for. From the way I understand network rendering, you only install the render client. Does this mean that I cant use VV5 on more than one computer if I want to use that system to network render?

Scenario:

I have two systems (p4 2.4GHZ and AMD 1600XP.) I use both systems to cut video (not at the same time.) So now I can only install VV5 on one system and then only use the other to network render. Can a machine that has the full version installed be used to network render as well?

You can buy another copy of Vegas (which gives you another "full install" and 2 more render-only installs for 6 in total) or get a site license.

"You can buy another copy of Vegas (which gives you another "full install" and 2 more render-only installs for 6 in total) or get a site license."

Was that intended for me? My question is that if I want to install VV5 on different machines to cut video ( I have different machines for different things) can they still be used for network rendering?
SonyPJM wrote on 4/19/2004, 9:26 AM

No, You can not do network renders with more than one full
installation of Vegas unless you have a site license or you've
purchased extra copies.

No, that was an answer for busterkeaton's post... I just answered your question too... see above.

i like NRS. i had problems getting it to work without a serial # & registering it.
once i registered- it works!!!
even if you only have ONE computer NRS can work for you. i find that when i render a project if i attempt to continue editing another project my computer is sluggish .. using NRS i can choose to use the HOST ( the computer i'm editing with) as the renderer and it will then render in backgound using ?? maybe 60% of the CPU. i can then continue editing either on the same project ( when you use NRS it saves a temp copy VEG of the project ) or another project and my computer is not sluggish.
i have used 3 computer rendering and it WORKS ...

i do recommend that you turn OFF firewalls (ie: zonealarm) until you have the NRS working. once it is working then turn on your firewalls and see what settings you may have to change to firewall.

Just wondering about the network rendering...on the additional render only computers, will you need to have copies all source clips and media on that one as well ?
SonyPJM wrote on 4/19/2004, 11:36 AM
The short answer is that all media must be in shared directories (see docs for more details).

However, it is possible to use replicated local storage as long as all media paths are the same on every machine.
db wrote on 4/19/2004, 12:10 PM
the computer you are working on is the HOST .. all folders that contain media , folder that you render to must be "SHARED" on the network .. you then map the folders in NRS ( see manual) ....
so if i'm on host computer called "dell" ... i would map my capture folder under NRS local and network .. local would be E:\capture .. network would be \\dell\capture ... if i use a 2nd computer to render or to help render then that computer called say sony. i would map NRS (on the sony) to the dell - IE: \\dell\capture

again you need to map each folder you have media for a project and map the folder that the render is being saved in ...
