Network Rendering-Help Please

Glad this forum exists to get help on stuff like this. I am working mostly with HD clips now and my render times have gone up. So I thought I would try setting up network rendering as I have another machince on the network.. 3.4 Ghz, hyperthreaded, 2 gb ram. Host machine will be AMD 64x 4800cpu with 2 gb ram. The machines were already set up on the network and work fine.

Here's what I did:
1. made sure I could see each machine on the network and could see all shared drives and folders and could ping each from the comand prompt.
2. made sure that port 53704 was open on both machines.
3. install latest version of vegas pro on proposed render machine (using same serial number as installed on host)
4. set up desktop shortcut for vegsrv80.exe on desktop
5. restart both machines
6.disabled firewall programs on both machines.
7. started vegsrv80.exe on host machine
8. under renderers tab added ip address of rendering machine
9. trys to connect, but always states "unavailable"

So, it is a mystery to me! I can see both machines on the network. Permissions are set up. I've been using the machines on the metwork for quite some time sharing files back and forth.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Galen

Galen,
I actually managed to get this working a while back - laptop and desktop. Didn't find much of an improvement in total render time, but perhaps that was due to the two systems being very different in speed.

What I did find very useful, was the whitepaper on the download section of this site. I followed that guide to the letter.

HTH,
Tom

edit: As I recall, file mappings were a critical part of the setup. Also make sure that the Network Render Service application is started.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to the white pages and started reading. Sounded familiar. Turns out that is the help file associated with vegsrv80.exe. I tried following it the best I could, but still get the "unavailale" status for the render computer.

Use this forum's search feature, using the key words "network render". You will see a bunch of threads and posts on this topic. The NR feature doesn't appear to work too well under Vegas 8P, but there were a few workarounds suggested by the Vegas community that got it working properly for me.

Thanks for your responses. My original search was for "network rendering" so I missed some of the threads suggested.

I'll keep working on this. I just can't figure out why the "renderer" comes up unavilable. Hopefully, if I can get this to work it will speed things up a little bit.

Well I think I am giving up.

After reading all the posts I could find, following DSE's recent book and the help file for vegsrv80.exe the best I can get is an intermittent connection. vegsrv80 needs to have a small module built in that you can trouble shoot directly from it since it does not seem to care that everything on the network is set up correctly outside of it and that everything functions perfectly. I could start it and get Ready status for renderer, close it, reopen and get Unavailable status.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
