Network Rendering "Project Not Found", also, can't get file mapping to accept external harddrive

I once had network rendering working and I just used my internal root "C" drive for all my files, but I reinstalled windows to get my computer workin better, and I cant get that to work anymore. I've done all things like share the root drive, both in the windows interface and using the dos prompt. I changed the DNS suffix. I've mapped the drive on my renderer and I get no little red exclamation error, on my main machine, the renderer says ready. Everything seems fine, it says rendering when I start a project, and then immediately says "project not found" All files, media files and veg files are on the same drive, which is shared in every aspect I could find, I dont know what it can't find. The other thing is, I got a 250gb external drive, which is where I want to keep all my video files, and ultimately network render from, but I cant get the file mapping on my renderer to recognize the "D" as the local directory. The drive is called D and my mapping looks like

Local Universal
D:\ \\basement\D

but to no avail.....

you need to share each folder not the root drive ( unless you just have everything sitting on root drive not in folders) ... once you have them "shared" then in NRS - file - AUTO-FILL auto mapping and all shared folders will be mapped ...

when you say changed the the suffix - you used IPCONFIG to see the name then went to MY computer - computer name -change- more and entered the suffix under Primary DNS suffix for this computer ..

Local Universal
D:\ \\basement\D ..

this is wrong ..there should only be 2 back slashes D:\\
ok you have a computer named "basemen"t and D drive is where the media is located - if all files are just sitting on D drive not in folders then it will work BUT if the media is sitting in folders on D drive then each folder needs to be shared & mapped... you do not need to map D drive only it's SHARED folders

i assume you are trying to map a drive that is NOT on the main computer ?
if you have computer 1 & computer 2 .. if your main computer is 1 then NRS will auto map all the shared folders & folders on the 1394 drive if it is hooked up to computer 1... HOWEVER sometimes if you unplug the 1394 drive then reconnect it you might have to re-share all the folders again ( click auto-fill file mapping) ... in this set up you do not have to map any folders on computer 2

now if you want to SAVE files to computer 2 ... then on computer 1 NRS the local and universal will be the same

\\computer2\Vegas render ....universal... \\computer2\Vegas render

so on computer 2 is a folder called Vegas render. note i could have 30 drives on computer 2 and i do NOT need to map any drive letters.... again in this situation NO folders need to be mapped on computer 2 under NRS ...

the only time you need to map shared folders in NRS on computer 2 is if you are starting (as in sitting/working in front of it ) the render job from computer 2

also beware that sometimes depending on XP/win2k .. if you share the 1394 folders on computer 1 then plug the drive into computer 2 and the folders still pop up as shared but Vegas NRS can't find them during a render = you need to go into the 1394 drive and UNSHARE all then share them ... i have found that 20% of the time when i take my 1394's to other computers they cannot use my files for NRS rendering ( they can see them and play them render them but not using NRS) until i unshare the folders then share them again ..

The problem I am getting with my external drive, is that I can't get the file mapping to recognize it. I read a post from SonyPJM that said if you had files on another drive, then to do

Local Universal
D:\ \\basement\D

This does not work, it says the local directory does not exist, however, the same exact set up is recognized for my C drive.

Local Universal
C:\ \\basement\C

I am trying to get network rendering to work on both drives. I once had it working on my main "C" drive and it worked great. Now, I can't get it to work. I have 5.0b on all machines, have changed the DNS suffix, shared all directories with media, both in the windows dialog and dos prompt. Everything is where it should go, but it keeps saying "project not found"

Ultimately I want my "D" drive to be the one that I network render from, because it is way bigger, but I can't even get past the step of setting up my file mappings. So I went back to see if I could get my C drive to work, and now I can't. (by the way, the reason I had to start with the C drive again, is because I reinstalled my operating system)

try ...go to 1394 drive and share whatever folders - put 1394 in the name:
ie: 1394capture ...1394render
for both local & universal mapping type in ..
\\computer name\1394capture

here's how NRS auto file mapping has my C drive
C:\vegas project file ....\\8200dell\vegas project file

here's my 1394
\\8200dell\1394 capture ...\\8200dell\1394 capture

are you on XP or win2K ?

I tried both of those file mappings, along with many others, for both my main C drive and external drive which is called "D" I'm still getting "project not found" on my C drive, and I could get the file mapping to recognize the D still. I'm using windows XP.

OK 1394 is reconized ...

for distribute rendering you have to remember to SHARE the folder where the temporary files will be located ( choose in NRS below where you choose the HOST) ...

C drive .. on main computer ( not renderer hard drive) .. using auto fill file mapping in NRS will map any folder that is shared on C drive - when you shared the folders you need to check 2 boxs - 1)share and 2) allow network users to change files ...

under NRS can it see the renderer as READY ?

lets try to get NRS working just on the main computer ...
create a folder vtest .. share it ..use auto fill file mapping ...
drop a clip in it folder ... open V5 drop the clip that is in vtest into TL .. add any FX ..
render 30 seconds .. use NRS ( do not check distribute render ) SAVE in the vtest folder .. choose main computer as HOST ...if that works go to B .... if V cannot find the project then either the dns suffix or computer name is miss-spelled ??

B) now do the same thing but this time use distribute rendering ( do NOT turn NRS on the other comuter yet) .. you will use distribute only on one computer - this render will break the rendering into approx 91 segments .. choose the temporary file location as vtest ... if this render works ...
now start NRS on your other computer and render again using distribute rendering .... NRS on your main computer should see the renderer as READY ( you enter name of the computer in NRS on main computer - you do not have to list any name , file mappings on the renderer )

just to double check all firewalls should be OFF ..if you use program like zone alarm turn it OFF ..get NRS working then deal with firewalls later ...
