network rendering set-up

Until now, I have been network rendering by using an rj-45 cable hooked up to both computers. Everytime I want to get on the internet I have to take out the rj and switch it with the cable from my modem. A friend of mine is getting rid of one of these http://games.dlink.com/products/?pid=371 and I was wondering if this was a suitable way to share my internet connection and set up a gigabit ethernet connection. My original plan was to buy a 10/100/1000 switch and an additional internet router to distribute my internet. If I use the gaming router that is linked above instead of the switch/router combo, will there be a performance difference in network rendering? Which is the better way to go to get maximum performance out of network rendering?

Thanks
-Jim
