New Camera

I may be purchasing a new camera, a Canon FS100, for general work - nothing fancy but it has 16:9 and it's in my price range. The storage is flash memory in mpeg2 format. My question is - after file transfer what is the best format to edit these files in VMS8 for DVD? I understand that VMS8 re-encodes mpeg every time it's rendered. Should I convert these files for editing? Any help appreciated.

The FS100 is not mpeg2, it is mpeg4, so it will have to re-render for DVDs. As long as VMS supports its .mts files (the camera is not out yet to be 100% sure as AVCHD is not 100% compatible between models and manufacturers), then you simply create a project that reflect the source footage (e.g. resolution, aspect ratio etc), you edit as such, and then you simply use the DVD mpeg2 widescreen template and AC3 template for sound. You then bring these two files on DVDA to burn them.

Thanks for the reply! Now, I called Canon (since the file format doesn't seem to be in any of their promo materials) and they told me it was mpeg2. Hmmm. I think I'll just wait until the release and check it out. Eugenia thanks so much for the info!
